TV가 재현하는 이혼한 한부모 여성의 모성 실천과 함의

국문 초록

한 사회가 지지하는 지배적 신화를 생산하는 통로로서 미디어 텍스트는 현실의 특정한 부분을 강조하거나 축소함으로써 사회 공동체가 선호하는 가치를 재생산해 왔다. 페미니스트연구자들은 미디어가 가사노동과 육아를 전담하는 희생적 ‘모성’ 실천을 이상화하고 여성들의영역을 가정으로 한정함으로써 가부장제와 공모하여 여성 억압의 기제로 작용해 왔음을 지적한다. 본 연구는 이러한 문제의식 아래 TV가 최근 하나의 가족 형태로 자리잡은 이혼한 한부모여성의 모성을 어떤 방식으로 재현하고, 어떠한 모성 담론을 생산하는지를 파악하기 위해JTBC <용감한 솔로육아-내가 키운다>의 서사를 분석하였다. 그 결과 기존의 재현체계와 다르지 않게 자신의 사회적 성취보다 안락한 공간에서 24시간 자녀를 보살피고 육아에 절대가치를 두는 전일제의 전통적 모성을 호명하고, 경제적 자원과 전문가적 지식, 노동력을 투입하는집약적 모성 실천을 지지하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 귀여운 아이들의 모습을 강조하고 가족이나 주변 사람들의 도움과 지지 속에 별다른 문제없이 행복하게 살아가는 낭만적 서사를 통해 한부모 여성이나 자녀들이 겪는 심리적, 정서적 문제를 은폐하고 봉합하였다. 이러한 재현전략은 가부장제를 이탈한 이혼한 한부모 여성들을 획일적으로 다시 자녀 양육이 절대가치인 모성의 주체로 환원함으로써 개별적이고 대안적인 삶의 가능성을 제한하는것이다. 또한 일반적인 한부모 여성들이 생계부양자이자 양육자로서 당면하는 경제적 압박과양육문제, 심리적 적응문제, 사회적 낙인 등의 현실적 문제들을 은폐함으로써 이들에 대한 사회적 관심과 정책의 부재를 불러올 수 있다.

영문 초록

The media, as a channel of myth predominantly accepted by a community, reproduces the values supported by society by emphasizing or undermining specific parts of reality. Researchers of feminism have criticized that media has idealized the “mothering” of women who sacrifice themselves to be fully responsible for housework and childcare, and limiting women to the household, thereby working with the patriarchal system to suppress women. This study conducted a narrative analysis of JTBC’s to identify how TV portrays the recently established family construct headed by a divorced single mother, and how it produces narratives around mothering. As a result, not dissimilar to the existing construct, the TV narrative advocates traditional mothering, whereby the mother prioritizes 24 hours a day childcare in a comforting setting before her own achievements, and also promotes financial, intellectual, and labor intensive mothering. It also has romantic narratives which portray cute children in happy families with help and support from family or close friends, and does not mention the emotional, psychological problems endured by the single mother or the children. This type of narrative limits the possibilities of women undertaking individual and alternative life choices as it uniformly puts divorced single mothers that have escaped the patriarchal system as the sole person responsible for childcare. In addition, by ignoring the real issues such as financial pressures, adequate childcare, emotional issues, social stigma that single mothers face as the sole breadwinner and parent, this can result a lack of social interest and policy action.
