풀무학교와 홍동의 지역교육공동체 만들기

국문 초록

충청남도 홍성군 홍동면은 지역사회와 교육기관이 유기적으로 협력하는 지역교육공동체의 모범적인 사례로 주목받고 있다. 풀무와 홍동의 사례가 널리 홍보되면서 이제 그에 대한 서사는 하나의 정사를 이루고 있다. 그렇지만 하나의 정사가 구축되면서 그로 인해 그 내부의 다양한 시행착와 갈등은 서사에서 제외되고 있다. 이 연구는 지역교육공동체 형성과정에서 전개된 시행착오와 갈등을 살펴보면서 오늘날 주류 담론이 된 쪽만 아니라 중심에서 벗어난 다양한 흐름들도 복원하여 그 공동체의 면모를 온전히 그려내는 것을 목표로 한다. 창립초기 풀무학교의 설립자들은 무교회 신앙을 바탕으로 무형의 ‘진리 공동체’를 지향했으나 이는 지역사회에서 고립되는 결과를 낳았다. 1960년대에 학교에 신용협동조합을 만들고 1970년대 이후 유기농업을 개척하면서 풀무학교는 고립을 벗어나 지역사회와 유기적 관계를 만들어내었다. 그 이후 정규고교화 추진과정의 갈등, 풀무생활협동조합의 파산 위기 등을 겪으며 풀무-홍동은 작은 학교와 작은 마을을 지향하는 초기 정신으로 회귀하였다. 홍동에서 1980년대 농민회 활동과 2010년대 녹색당 활동에 주도적인 역할을 한 인물들은 풀무학교의 졸업생 또는 교사, 학생들이었다. 그 과정에서 갈등이 고조되었으며, 그 이후 풀무학교에서 정치적 활동은 금기시되었다. 과연 지역교육공동체의 존속을 위해 ‘정치’의 영역은 배제되어야 하는가는 여전히 풀기 어려운 질문으로 남는다.

영문 초록

Hongdong-myeon, Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do has been attracting attention as an exemplary example of a local education community. As the case of Pulmu in Hong-dong has been widely promoted, the narrative about it now forms an authentic history. However, as an authentic history is being established, various trials and errors and conflicts have been excluded from the narrative. This study aims to draw a full picture of the different aspects of the community by restoring not only the mainstream discourse, but also marginalized perspectives. In the early days of its foundation, the founders of Pulmu School aimed for an intangible truth community based on their non-churchism. However, this resulted in isolation from the local community. As a credit cooperative was created in schools in the 1960s and organic agriculture was pioneered after the 1970s, Pulmu School escaped isolation and created organic relations with the local community. In Hong-dong, graduates, teachers, and students of Pulmu School played a leading role in the activities of the Farmers Association in the 1980s and of the Green Party in the 2010s. In the process, conflicts escalated, and political activities at Pulmu School were thereafter banned. Conflicts still remain as to whether the realm of politics should be excluded from the local education community.
