영문 초록

Generally, furniture belongs to industrial products. Therefore furniture designers usually use industrial product design method which is effective for mass production to develop their new furniture goods. However, furniture design needs its own method and process because of its traits. Its own method is especially efficient on personal and home decorative items. This study focused on the method of intuitive design in furniture. In contrast with the traditional method of mass production item design, it is suitable for small scale factories or studios and should be supported to produce distinguished items which are impossible to develop in the way of mass production. Mass production furniture items can be developed by common design process which is known well as the orthodox method of product design for industrial companies. On the other hand, the small amount produced furniture items, which is quite decorative, attractive and creative, are effectively developed by the intuitive method based on experience and motive. In this study, the intuitive design method was classified into four groups, the way of metaphor expression, material approach, interpretation of structural function in forms, and inspiration from motive. The character and case of each method was analyzed for the pertinent application in furniture design.
