To make clear the relationships between high temperature compressed woods and uncompressed woods of Jujube tree(Zizyphus jujuba M.) such as control wood and lightning wood, wood powder of eighty mesh were subjected to fine structure analysis by X-ray diffraction method and chemical analysis by gas chromatography, etc. Treatment of compressing was conducted in the radial direction of wood. Relative crystallinity measured by the Segal s method was 52% in control wood and 52% in compressed wood and 62% in lightning wood, and 51% in compressed lightning wood. The crystallite dimension in width was 2. 52nm in control wood and 2.37nm in compressed wood and 3.13nm in lightning wood, and 2.50nm in compressed lightning wood. The d-spacing of (200) in equatorial was 0.4038±0.0043nm. Amount of alcohol-benzene extractives for pretreated wood was low. During the various pretreatment, a small portion of hemicellulose was degradated. Pretreated woods have a high proportion of ash content in the contrast of control wood. Consequently control wood and pretreated wood were different but lightning wood and compressed wood did not identity in the chemical composition. From the observation by scanning electron microscope in cross section of specimens, morphological damages such as checks or splits relate to ray and vessel, and compressive deformation were detected in any parts of compressed woods. Therefore, remarkable structure deformation differences, due to compressing, were observed in unwoods and compressed woods. As these results, it was considered that fine structures and chemical compositons, and microscopic obdid not show any differences between the control wood and lightning wood.
