국문 초록

‘고령사회연구센터’를 만든 배경에는 2011년 이래의 ‘재난과 안전’ 연구에서 얻어진 ‘동아시아안전공동체’의 지속적인 추구라는 사명감이 있다. 시니어에 대한 20세기 초에 만들어진 낡은 ‘노령담론’에 기초한 진부한 생각을 넘어, 시니어문제에 프렌들리하게 접근하고자 하는 것이다. 원래 ‘에이지 프렌들리’는 “고령자의 특성을 고려한다.”는 의미에서 나온 말이지만, 시니어에게만 프렌들리한 것이 아니다. 시니어들이 자신의 이후를 자발적으로 준비하는 것은, 장래세대의 부담을 경감시키는 일로 환영할 일이다. 그리고 ‘초고령사회’를 살아가야 하는 우리들로서 실천 가능한 구체적인 행위는 ‘웰 다잉(종활)’이다. 어떻게 떠날 것인가의 자연스런 준비는 “스스로 기약하며(自期), 스스로 남기는(自遺) 고고(孤高)한 행위”일 것이다.

영문 초록

The basis of the establishment of the “Research Center for the Aging Society” in Japan is a sense of mission to continuously pursue the goal of a safe East Asian community, which has been ongoing in the field of disaster prevention and management and safety since 2011. Going beyond the clichéd ideas of the past discourse regarding old age which emerged at the beginning of the 20th century, this study attempts to approach the issues affecting seniors in a comprehensive way. Originally, the notion of an “age-friendly” approach meant taking into account the characteristics of the elderly, but the concept has broader implications. It would benefit everyone if seniors were to voluntarily prepare for their future, as this would relieve the burden on future generations. And one of the specific considerations that individuals who will imminently be living in a “super-aged” society in Japan should engage with is the need to prepare to “die well”. Preparation for leaving this world would constitute the honorable act of making a promise to oneself and fulfilling it.
