국문 초록

‘남양’ 지역이 한반도에서 만들어진 문헌이나 신문·잡지 등의 매체 속에서 어떻게 인식되고 있었는지에 관한 연구는 2000년대 이후 상당수 이루어졌다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 이들 연구는 주로 1930년대 중반 이후 중일전쟁과 태평양전쟁으로 이어지는 시기를 대상으로 하는 경우가 대부분이었다. 그러나 󰡔경성일보󰡕의 ‘남양’ 관련 기사를 중심으로 보았을 때, 한반도의 신문매체는 1910년대부터 이 지역에 관한 다양한 분야의 정보를 발신하고 있었으며, 특히 연재물을 통해 ‘남양’ 지역의 관습과 인종, 풍물, 경제, 문화, 자연환경 등을 집중적으로 전달하고자 하였다. 1910년에서 1935년에 이르기까지 󰡔경성일보󰡕의 ‘남양’ 관련 기사의 특징을 총괄하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 1910년에서 1935년에 걸친 기사 중, 남양군도의 위임통치와 연계된 기사가 상대적으로 매우 많은데 이는 1차 세계대전 이후 일본이 남양군도를 위임통치하면서 이에 대한 높은 관심도를 반영하고 있다고 보인다. 둘째, 이 시기 󰡔경성일보󰡕의 또 다른 특징은 ‘남양 소개 및 견문, 시찰, 탐험’ 관련 기사는 매우 많았다는 점인데, 이는 1910년대부터 이 지역에 관한 정보의 수요가 꾸준히 있었음을 보여준다. 셋째, ‘남양 소개 및 견문, 시찰, 탐험’과 연관된 기사 중 이 지역의 원주민과 관련된 내용들은 전체적으로는 원시적이고 야만적인 이미지, 구습에 얽매이고 게으르며 지식 정도가 높지 않은 마이너스적 표상을 적극적으로 드러내고 있다. 넷째, 이 시기 󰡔경성일보󰡕의 이들 기사 중 상당수는 ‘남양’ 지역에 내에서 일본의 위치, 경제적 진출, 세력 확장, 일본 통치의 당위성을 상당히 의식하고 있었으며 이를 적극적으로 선전하고 하나의 담론으로 만들어가고자 하였다.

영문 초록

Since the 2000s, there have been many studies on how the literature, newspapers, and magazines published on the Korean Peninsula during the Japanese colonial period perceived the ‘the South Seas’ area. However, most of these studies were conducted on the period leading to the Sino-Japanese War and the Pacific War after the mid-1930s. However, focusing on the articles related to ‘the South Seas’ in Keijo-Nippo, newspapers published in the Korean Peninsula have been distributing information in various fields related to the region since the 1910s, and in particular, through serials, It was intended to actively convey race, customs, economy, culture, and natural environment of ‘the South Seas’ area. The features of Keijo-Nippo’s ‘the South Seas’ articles from 1910 to 1935 are summarized below. First, among the articles from 1910 to 1935, there are relatively many articles related to the mandate of The South Sea Islands. This seems to reflect the high interest in Japan’s mandate to govern The South Sea Islands after World War I. Second, another characteristic of Keijo-Nippo during this period is that there were a lot of articles related to ‘introduction, experience, inspection, and exploration to the South Seas’. This shows that there has been a steady demand for information on this area since the 1910s. Third, among the articles related to ‘Introduction, experience, inspection, and exploration to the South Seas’, the articles related to the indigenous peoples of this area actively display a primitive and savage image, a negative representation that is tied to old habits, lazy, and low in knowledge. Fourth, many of these articles by Keijo-Nippo during this period were very conscious of Japan’s position in the South Seas region, economic advancement, expansion of power, and the justification of Japanese rule. Therefore, the Keijo-Nippo actively promoted it and tried to make it into a discourse.
