한국 제2차 인구변천의 특징

국문 초록

본 연구는 한국에서 지속되고 있는 낮은 혼인율과 출산율 문제에 대해서 문화적으로 접근하여 결혼 및 출산과 관련된 객관적 지수와 태도/가치관 지수를 따로 측정한 후 유럽과 비교하여 한국에서 나타나는 제2차 인구변천의 특징을 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해 객관적 지수는 2017년도 또는 2018년도의 OECD family database 자료를 사용하여 측정하였고, 태도/가치관 지수는 2017년도의 European Values Study(EVS) 자료와 한국의 경우는 KGSS 2018 조사를 활용하여 측정하였다. 이를 바탕으로 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 태도/가치관 지수가 높은 유럽 국가들은 객관적 지수가 같이 높고 태도/가치관 지수가 낮은 일부 유럽 국가들은 객관적 지수도 함께 낮은 반면에, 한국은 태도/가치관 지수는 가장 낮은 국가임에도 불구하고 객관적 지수는 높게 나타나 유럽의 제2차 인구변천과는 다른 추세를 보인다. 둘째, 한국에서 태도/가치관 지수가 가장 높은 집단인 20대 여성들은 결혼 및 출산과 관련된 개인주의적 태도가 높음에도 불구하고 가족의 제도적 가치는 부정하지 않는 것으로 나타나 이들은 개인주의적이면서도 가족중심적인 특징을 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구는 한국의 결혼 및 출산과 관련된 다양한 인구 행동 변화를 이해하고자 객관적 지수와 태도/가치관 지수를 따로 측정하여 유럽과 비교연구를 통해 한국에서 나타나는 제2차 인구변천의 양상을 드러냈다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This study takes a cultural approach to the low marriage rate and fertility rate in Korea by measuring objective and attitude/value indices separately related to the marriage and childbearing, and examines the characteristics of the second demographic change in Korea compared to Europe. Using OECD family database data for objective index and European Values Study (EVS) data and Korean General Social Survey (KGSS) data for attitude/value index, we investigate how the Second Demographic transition occurs in Korea. While European countries with high attitude/value index have similarly high objective index and some European countries with low attitude/value index also have low objective index, Korea with the lowest attitude/value index have significantly high objective index, showing a different trend from the second demographic transition in Europe. Women in their 20s do not deny the institutional value of family despite being in the group with the highest attitude/value index, so they have individualistic but familial attitude. This study contributes to the literature by revealing the characteristics of the second demographic transition in Korea through measuring objective and attitude/value indices separately and conducting a comparative study with Europe.
