崔述의 『論語餘說』 硏究

국문 초록

최술(1740~1816)은 평생에 걸쳐 실증적이고 과학적인 고증학을 바탕으로 考信錄 諸書를 저술하여 청대 고증학의 정점에 서있는 인물이다. 이 중에서 공자와 공자제자의 행적을 변증한 『洙泗考信錄『과 『洙泗考信餘錄』, 맹자와 맹자제자의 행적을 변증한 『孟子事實錄』등이 그의 대표적인 저작이라고 할 수 있다. 본고에서 다루는 『논어여설』은 『논어』에 대한 고증을 체계적으로 시도한 저술이다. 그러나 특이하게도 『논어여설』은 고신록 제서에 포함되어 있지 않고, 이들과 분리되어 따로 수록되어 있다. 최술은 『수사고신록』과 『수사고신여록』이나 『맹자사실록』 등에서 孔孟과 門徒들의 행적을 고증하고 나서도, 『논어』에 대하여서는 따로 분리해서 체계적으로 변증해야할 필요를 느꼈던 것 같다. 다만 앞서 행한 논증과 중복되는 논증을 피하고 남은 것들만을 고증했기 때문에, ‘餘說’이라고 제목을 부친 것이다. 『논어여설』은 僞學들이 경전을 어지럽히고 邪說들이 성현을 무고하는 현실 속에서, ‘辨僞考信’을 기치로 평생 동안 『논어』의 고증에 몰두해왔던 최술이 자신의 학문적 성과를 마무리하는 상징적인 저술이다. 공자와 공자제자들의 사적을 고증한 『수사고신록』과 『수사고신여록』은, 맹자와 제자들의 행적을 고증한 『맹자사실록』으로 그 계보가 이어졌고, 마침내 『논어여설』에 이르러 그 대미를 장식했다고 할 수 있다. 최술의 孔孟관계 저술은 이것으로 일단락되었다. 필자는 『논어여설』의 구성과 변증항목을 정리하고, 『논어여설』 고증의 특징을, ‘1) 공허한 格物窮理의 배격과 平實의 추구, 2) 『논어집주』에 대한 비판과 수용, 3) 講章家들의 통속적 해석 배척, 4) 『논어』 後5편 篇章의 신뢰도 분석’으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 최술은 『논어여설』의 고증과정에서 엄정하고 실증적인 ‘최술 고증학’의 특징을 그대로 반영하여 보여주고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

영문 초록

Choi Sul (1740~1816) stands at the apex of Qing bibliographical study by writing various Gosinrok books based on empirical and scientific bibliographical study throughout his life. His books representative of his lifetime works are Susagosinrok and Susagosinyeorok, which demonstrate the achievements of Confucius and his pupils, and Maengjasasilrok, which demonstrates the achievements of Mencius and his pupils. His book Noneoyeosul discussed in this study attempted to investigate Analects of Confucius with historical evidence. What is interesting is that it is not included in his Gosinrok books, being separate from them. It seems that Choi must have felt a need to demonstrate Analects of Confucius separately and systematically even after investigating the achievements of Confucius and Mencius and their disciples in his Susagosinrok, Susagosinyeorok, and Maengjasasilrok with historical evidence. He added the term yeosul to the title of the book because he left out the overlapping parts with his earlier demonstrations and investigated the remaining with historical evidence. Noneoyeosul was his symbolic book to sum all of his academic achievements up after a lifetime commitment to the demonstration of Analects of Confucius under the banner of demonstrating falsehood and clarifying truth at a time when illegitimate schools disturbed the scriptures and heretical doctrines wrongfully accused the sages. The lineage continued from Susagosinrok and Susagosinyeorok, which investigated the achievements of Confucius and his pupils, to Maengjasasilrok, which investigated the achievements of Mencius and his pupils with Noneoyeosul as the finale. With the book, Choi s writing of Confucius-Mencius relations came to the end of a chapter. The investigator sorted out the organization and demonstration items of Noneoyeosul and examined the characteristics of its historical investigation according to 1) rejection of empty Gyeokmulgungri and pursuit of Pyeongshil, 2) criticism and acceptance of Noneojipju, 3) rejection of popular interpretations by Gangjanggas, and 4) analysis of the reliability of Pyeonjang in Analects of Confucius Hu 5. The results show that Choi reflected and demonstrated the strict and empirical characteristics of his bibliographical study in the historical investigation process of Noneoyeosul.
