朝鮮後期 士人의 刀劒愛好傾向에 대한 考察

국문 초록

조선후기의 도검은 조선후기 士大夫의 관념 속에 깃들어있던 文武兼全의 정신을 상징하는 귀중한 한국의 문화유산이다. 사대부에게 있어서 도검은 다양한 意象을 포함하는 상징적인 器物로 인식되었으며, 이는 사대부가 남긴 刀劒文學 作品 속에서 문학적으로 형상화되어 나타난다. 조선후기에는 士大夫들의 고급 취향인 書畵·古董 수집 경향이 부각되면서 그 일환으로 刀劒 수집 및 감식이 하나의 民間 文化로 등장하게 된다. 이에 발맞추어, 당시대의 도검을 소재나 제재로 한 문학작품인 刀劒文學에서도 劒이라는 특징적인 器物이 ‘武’의 象徵으로서 사대부들에게 각광을 받게 되었다. 본고에서는 조선후기 사인의 도검 애호경향을 고찰하기 위하여, 먼저 도검의 제작 및 유통양상을 살펴보았다. 조선의 도검제작 문화와 함께, 국외 도검의 수입과 유통경로에 대해서는 일본도에 관한 자료를 중심으로 하여 조명하였다. 그리고 도검의 애호와 소장 문화에 대해서는 양난 이후 조선 사대부의 상무정신과 도검과의 상관성을 주목하여 설명하였고, 아울러 사대부의 실제 도검기물에 대한 애호와 수집 경향도 함께 소개하였으며, 이러한 경향이 寶劒으로서의 古劒을 정신수양을 위한 修身物인 修養劒으로 간주하는 士人의 근본적인 의식구조에서 비롯되었음을 밝혔다. 조선후기 사인의 도검 애호경향은, 바로 도검문학 성행 배경의 문화적 근저가 되었다. 도검문학 속에서 修養劒, 義劒, 神劒, 護國劒 등 여러 가지 意象으로 형상화된 도검의 文學的 象徵性은 조선조 사대부들이 평소 도검에 대해서 생각했던 관념이었다.

영문 초록

The sword of the late Joseon dynasty is an important cultural inheritance of Korea which signifies the idea of having both literary and military accomplishments of Korean SaDaeBu(士大夫, the ruling aristocracy). Korean swords as well as the symbolic items containing various kinds of imagery, are present in Korean Sword literature. In the late Joseon dynasty, the trend of collecting various antiques rose in popularity. Especially in the case of collecting and identifying swords, which became a private culture. At the same time, ‘sword literature(刀劒文學) which refers to the sword as their subject matter, came to represent the spirits of sword which symbolized SaDaeBu s thinking about strong power. This paper studies the trend of the sword collecting of SaDaeBu in the late Joseon dynasty. At first, it shows sword production and the sword distribution channel of the late Joseon dynasty. It also shows sword manufacturing culture and explores the imported swords distribution channels, especially those relating to the Japanese Katana. In case of collecting and identifying sword culture, it is based on a correlation between SaDaeBu s martialism and mental culture, because of this, SaDaeBu wanted to collect real swords. SaDaeBu regarded an old sword as a treasure sword, and believed that if someone possessed a sword, it coud help a man to be more courageous. SaDaeBu s actions in collecting and identifying swords became the base of sword literature. The Self-Discipline sword(修養劒), the Justice sword(義劒), the Spiritual sword(神劒), and the Guardian sword(護國劒) were Korean sword imageries in Korean Sword literature. These kind of literary imageries were SaDaeBu s notion about swords.
