문화적 개신교의 발전과 몰락

국문 초록

문화적 개신교는 독일 개신교와 독일 사회를 쇄신하는 데 얼마큼 이바지했고, 어째서 급속히 영향력을 상실했는가? 문화적 개신교는 독일에 서 국민국가 형성에 동반된 개신교 개혁 운동이었다. 문화적 개신교의 특성은 국가교회 체제에 대한 저항, 하나님 나라와 역사의 연속성의 강조, 국민국가 형성에 대한 공헌 등에서 가장 잘 드러난다. 본 논문의 II장에서 필자는 문화적 개신교가 독일 국가교회 체제에 저항하면서 종교적 내면성과 교회자치권을 중시했음을 살폈다. III장에서는 칸트가 펼쳐 놓은 하나님 나라의 윤리화의 지평에서 리하르트 로테가 구상한 매개신학과 사회윤리, 알브레히트 리츨이 전개한 하나님 나라 윤리와 직업윤리 등은 역사와 하나님 나라의 연속성을 전제한다는 점을 논증했다. IV장에서는 문화적 개신교 운동이 마르틴 루터의 종교개혁 정신을 독일정신으로 가다듬어 독일 국민의 정체성과 독일 국민 형성에 이바지했고, 독일황제제국 시대에 강력한 국가와 근대화를 요구한 부르주아 계급과 동일한 지향을 가졌음을 분석했다. 문화적 개신교가 역사와 하나님 나라를 서로 분리하지 않고 이를 서로 결합하는 매개체를 윤리에서 찾았다는 것은 여전히 의미가 있다. 문제는 문화적 개신교가 역사와 하나님 나라의 본질적 차이와 둘 사이의 좁혀지지 않는 거리를 인정하면서도 역사와 하나님 나라를 서로 매개시키는 논리를 제대로 제시하지 못했다는 것이다. 문화적 개신교의 결정적인 약점은 하나님 나라의 지향을 개인의 도덕적 동기로 포착하고, 하나님의 무조건적인 사랑에 대응하는 이웃사랑의 의무를 개인의 도덕적 행위로 해소하였다는 데 있다. 그러한 의무도덕이 직업윤리의 형식을 취하게 될 때, 그 윤리는 필연적으로 부르주아 사회를 정당화하고 강화하는 체제 영합적 윤리로 납작하게 눌리게 된다. 이러한 신학적 빈곤과 윤리적 빈곤으로 인해 문화적 개신교는 제1차 세계대전이 적나라하게 보여준 부르주아 문화의 파탄을 넘어서지 못한 채 스스로 무너지고 말았다.

영문 초록

How much has Cultural Protestantism contributed to the renewal of German Protestantism and German society? Why did it rapidly lose its influence? Cultural Protestantism was a Protestant reform movement that accompanied the formation of a nation-state in Germany. The characteristics of cultural Protestantism are best revealed in resistance to the state church system, emphasis on the continuity of the Kingdom of God and history, and contribution to the formation of a nation-state. I analyze these threefold characteristics respectively. First I pay attention to that cultural Protestantism emphasized religious internality and church autonomy while resisting the German state church system. Second I argue that Richard Rothe’s mediation theology and social ethics and Albrecht Ritschl’s Kingdom-of-God-ethics and professional ethics (Berufethik) presupposed the continuity of history and the Kingdom of God on the horizon of ethicalization of the Kingdom of God unfolded by Immanuel Kant. Third I explain that Cultural Protestant movement contributed to the formation of the identity of German nation and nation-state by refining Martin Luther s Reformation spirit into the German spirit, and that it had the same orientation as the bourgeoisie who demanded a powerful state and a state-initiated modernization during the German imperial era. It is still meaningful that cultural Protestantism did not separate history and the Kingdom of God from each other, but mediated them through ethics. The problem lies in that cultural Protestantism could not acknowledge the essential difference and the inextricable distance between history and the Kingdom of God. As a result, it failed to properly present the logic to mediate history and the Kingdom of God. The decisive weakness of cultural Protestantism is that it captured the orientation to God s Kingdom as an individual s moral motive, and that it resolved the duty of loving neighbor in response to God s unconditional love through individual moral actions. Such moral morality took the form of professional ethic in the capitalistic organization of labor. Therefore it was inevitably flattened into a system conform ethics that justified and strengthened the bourgeois society. Due to these theological and ethical poverty, cultural Protestantism collapsed on its own. It could not overcome the unsustainable bourgeois culture that World War I had exposed.
