한국의 개교회 성장주의에서 비롯된 신뢰 위기와 극복 방안

국문 초록

교계의 여러 여론조사에서는 한국 개신교의 공신력이 매우 낮은 것으로 나타나고 있다. 최근에 논란이 되었던 일련의 일들에서 볼 때 개신교의 모습은 우리 사회의 책임 있는 일원이라기보다는 오로지 자신들의 이익만을 추구하는 하나의 이익집단과 같이 여겨지고 있기 때문이다. 한국교회 안에 개교회주의와 교회 성장주의가 깊게 자리 잡고 있는 것이 그 주요 요인이다. 개교회주의 자체가 부정적인 것은 아니지만 현실에서는 개교회 이기주의라는 부정적인 형태로 나타나고 있다. 선교 초기의 어려운 경제 상황에서 개교회가 자급하기 위해서는 교회 안의 모든 자원을 교회의 유지와 확장을 위해 동원하여 교회 성장을 추구하는 것이 현실적인 선택이었다. 그러나 이러한 상황이 1백 년 넘게 지속되면서 한국교회에서는 많은 문제들이 나타나고 있다. 무엇보다도 교회의 본질 요소 가운데 하나인 공동체성이 약화되었을 뿐만 아니라 우리 사회에서 이기적인 집단으로 여겨지고 있는 것이 큰 문제이다. 이러한 문제를 극복하기 위해서는 먼저 공교회성이 회복되어야 한다. 지상에 있는 모든 교회가 똑같은 하나님의 교회이고 그리스도의 몸된 교회이다. 개교회가 공동체일 뿐만 아니라 전체 교회가 공동체를 이루어야 한다. 그리고 교회의 공공성이 회복되어야 한다. 교회들이 연합하여 협력을 한다고 해도 그것이 교회들의 이익만 추구할 뿐 우리 사회의 공동선을 이루고자 하는 노력으로 이어지지 않는다면 집단 이기주의와 크게 다를 바 없다. 교회의 공공성을 바탕으로 교회가 속한 지역사회에서 공적인 역할을 감당해야 한다. 교회가 스스로 공동체를 이룰 뿐만 아니라 피폐해진 지역 사회를 공동체화 하는 일에서 역할을 감당한다면 한국교회는 우리 사회의 어엿한 구성원으로서의 책무를 다하게 되고 사회로부터의 공신력도 회복하게 될 것이다.

영문 초록

Polls from various Christian outlets have shown that public confidence in Korean Protestant churches is very low. When a series of recent controversial events were examined, the image portrayed by the Protestant churches is that of one of many interest groups that only seek their interest rather than being a part of a responsible member of the society. The main factor behind it the deep rootedness of church individualism and growthism within the Korean churches. church individualism is not negative in and of itself, but currently, comes off as negative due to being sensed as selfish. In the early days of church planting where financial situation was difficult, it was a realistic choice to seek church growth by mobilizing every resource within the church for maintenance and expansion so that the local church may become self-sufficient. But as this mentality continued for over a hundred years, many problems are surfacing within the Korean churches. Not only is community, a core element within church, is weakened, but that the church is perceived by our society as a selfish group is a big problem. In order to overcome this problem, Universal church must first be restored. All churches on earth are God’s church, the body of Christ. Each church is a community, and all churches must come together to form a community. And the publicity of churches needs to be restored. Even if the churches come to work together, if they do not work towards a common good of the society but seek only their interest, then their efforts are essentially no different from collective selfishness. Grounded on publicity of the church, churches must take on public roles within the community they belong. If the church builds up community within itself and take on roles to further communities that have been impoverished by the society, then the Korean church will have fulfilled the responsibility as the full member of the society and regained public trust.
