趙龜命『追記東峽遊賞』의 문체와 작가의식의 의미에 관하여

국문 초록

본고는 東谿 趙龜命(1693~1737)의 丹陽 山水遊記『追記東峽遊賞』의 문체와 작가의식이 지니고 있는 의미를 분석한 글이다. 특히 『추기동협유상』이 지닌 독특하고 난해한 문체에 유의하여, 이를 조귀명 후기 문예론에 나타난 난해한 문체에 대한 긍정과 연관지어 이해해보고자 하였다. 본고에서 규명한 내용은 다음과 같다. 우선 제2장에서는 『추기동협유상』의 ‘수옥정’조 단락을 집중적으로 분석하여, 난해하고 독특한 문체 이면에는 인간과 자연을 대비시키는 시각, 자신을 ‘시선의 주체’로서 자각하는 분명한 자의식, 인간과 자연의 매체로서 예술에 주목하거나 자연의 신화적 근원성에 주목하는 것과 같은 독창적 사유가 존재하고 있음을 밝혔다. 이어서 제3장에서는 앞장의 논의를 발전시켜, 『추기동협유상』에서 구사된 것과 같은 난해한 문체를 긍정한 바탕에는 당대 모방적 문풍으로 인해 죽어 있던 조선 문단에 생기와 자유와 다양성을 회복시키고, 살아 있는 전범으로서 후대와 대화적 관계에 들어가 열린 영향력을 행사하고자 하는 작가의식이 있다는 점을 밝혔다. 그와 함께 조귀명의 문예론에서 대상의 살아 있는 이치를 독창적으로 포착하여 그려낼 때 창작주체와 대상이 모두 생명과 영속성을 획득한다는 점을 밝혔고, 조귀명이 자연을 보는 독특한 방식을 형성한 한 원인으로서 그의 실존적 조건인 병약한 체질을 지목하였다.

영문 초록

In this study I examined the literary style of Cho Kwimyŏng s Reminiscence on Former Travel around Eastern Valley Area(Ch ugidonghyŏbyusang in Korean) and the said writher s consciousness implied in the work. What I thought particularly noteworthy about Reminiscence is its rather abstruse style of writing, which had become a target of criticism by a literary critique of Cho Kwimyŏng s time, and its impact on Cho Kwimyŏng s later literary theory which advocated use of abstruse style in prose works in favor of expressing individuality. In the second chapter I argued that Reminiscence s abstruse and distinctive style, which was as a former study suggests a result from adapting various literary style of late Ming travel writing works and Classic of Mountains and Seas(Shanhaijing in Chinese), should be understood as an reflection of Cho Kwimyŏng s original thought, such as his self-consciousness of being a subject of gaze, his seeing art as a media between a man and nature, and his understanding nature as a mythic foundation. In the third chapter I explained about Cho Kwimyŏng s consciousness as a writer: that he thought one can bring freedom and diversity and liveliness to the literary world of his time, and achieve open and alive immortality, when one refuse to step back from voicing one’s original thought in one’s original style, however abstruse it might be; that he thought only when one can capture an object’s profound principle by one’s original way of seeing things, the author and the represented object can obtain eternal life and keep on to impact the later times.
