국문 초록

이 글은 한말시기 지리산권 의령지역의 재야지식인 안익제의 지리산 인식과 그의 유람록 「두류록」 및 연작기행시 2편에 나타난 표현 특징을 살폈다. 그의 지리산행은 한말시기 성행하던 여타 산행과 비교하여 차별화가 확인되었다. 먼저 수백 년 간 지속되어 온 ‘지리산․두류산․방장산’에 대한 의미와 인식이 전혀 다르게 나타났고, 그 중에서도 ‘智異’를 ‘지혜로운 인물과 특이한 산물이 많이 난다.’는 의미로 인식한 점은 안익제만의 독특한 시각이었다. 역대로 지리산권역에서 빼어난 인물이 많이 배출되었고, 그 지리산을 토대로 삶을 영위해 온 ‘인간과 연계된 지리산’을 염두에 둔 인식이었다. 또한 ‘천왕봉’에 투영한 시대정신은 특히 지식인으로서의 안익제를 돋보이게 하는 인식이었다. 앞 시대 선현들이 천왕봉을 智異山神이 주재하는 곳 또는 天道의 道伴 등으로 인식했다면, 안익제는 ‘임금=국가’를 상징하는 존재로 인식하였다. 어려운 격변기를 살아가는 재야지식인의 울분과 염원이 투영된 시각이며, 나아가 수백 년 간 별다른 이견 없이 수용되어 오던 기존의 인식과 차별화된 것이었다. 이러한 독특한 인식에 의해 서술된 유람록과 기행시에는 여타 작품과 다른 표현상의 특징이 도출되었다. 거쳐 가는 ‘모든 장소’에서 그 이름의 유래․역사적 사건․관련 인물 등을 토대로 공간의 의미를 풀어내었고, 특히 잘못된 정보를 바로잡아 서술함으로써 관련 공간에 대한 객관성을 유지하려는 태도가 두드러졌다. 또한 유람록을 일정별 기록이 아닌 記事 방식으로 서술하였는데, 안익제가 이로써 지리산권역 공간의 후대 전승을 염두에 두었음을 확인하였다. 「두류록」은 ‘유람록 형식의 서술’이라는 점을 배제하고 읽으면 마치 지리산권역에 대한 地理誌를 보는 듯 꼼꼼하고 섬세한데, 그만큼 객관성과 기록성을 중시했음을 알게 해준다.

영문 초록

This study set out to investigate Ahn Ik-je s perceptions of Mt. Jiri as an out-of-office intellectual in Uiryeong within the zone of Mt. Jiri in late Joseon and also the expressive characteristics of his travel essay Duryurok and two travel poems. Ahn s travel to Mt. Jiri was differentiated from that of other scholars in late Joseon when mountain travel was prevalent. He had completely different meanings and perceptions of Mt. Jiri, Mt. Duryu, and Mt. Bangjang from their old meanings and perceptions that had lasted for hundreds of years. He understood that Jiri meant producing an abundance of wise figures and particular products, thus presenting his own unique viewpoint. His perception was based on the facts that outstanding figures were born in large numbers in the zone of Mt. Jiri in history and that people had led a life based on Mt. Jiri associated with human beings. He also projected the spirit of the times onto Cheonwangbong, which highlighted him as an intellectual. While the ancient sages of previous periods regarded it as a place where the gods of Mt. Jiri would preside or Doban of Cheondo, Ahn perceived it as an entity to symbolize the idea that a king is the state. This viewpoint reflects his pent-up anger and wish as an out-of-office intellectual going through difficult and turbulent times and is further differentiated from the old perceptions that had been accepted for hundreds of years with no different opinions. Written on his unique perceptions, his travel essay and poems contained different expressive characteristics from other works. He interpreted the meanings of space at all the places he went to based on their name origins, historical events, and related figures and corrected wrong information in his descriptions, which highlighted his attitude of trying to keep objectivity for the related places. In addition, he wrote his travel essay in the article form instead of recording it according to the itinerary, which confirms that he had the transmission of the spaces within the zone of Mt. Jiri to later generations on mind. If one reads Duryurok without realizing that it contains descriptions in the travel essay form, he or she will find its meticulous and delicate depiction of the zone like a geography book, which demonstrates that he placed such importance on objectivity and recording.
