이상 시에 나타난 근대 학문의 의미 고찰

국문 초록

이상의 시에는 과학, 수학, 의학 등 다양한 근대 학문적 요소들이 빈번하게 나타난다. 이때 등장하는 근대 학문적 이론들은 단순히 시적 수사로 활용되는 선에서 그치는 것이 아니라 텍스트를 구성하는 주요 방법론이자 모티프로서 기능한다. 그런데 이렇게 근대 학문적 이론들을 적극적으로 차용하는 모습은 이상이 근대 학문에 대한 반감을 작품에서 드러냈던 것과 상충하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 본고에서는 이상이 자신에게 부정적 대상이었던 근대 학문에 오히려 몰입하고 있는 모습에 대하여 근대 학문의 부정성을 마냥 회피하거나 거부할 수만은 없었던 근대적 주체로서의 노력으로 파악해 보았고, 그러한 태도를 ‘투신’이라고 규정하였다. 그의 이러한 ‘투신’적 태도는 헤겔이 새로운 시대로 넘어가는 과도기에 주체의 역할을 고민하였던 것과 상통하는 모습을 보였는데, 헤겔에게 주체성이란 부정적인 것을 외면하는 것이 아니라 직시하고 그 곁에 머무름으로써 그 부정성을 진정한 ‘존재’로 뒤바꾸는 일종의 마력(魔力)에 해당하는 것이었다. 결국 근대인 이상이 근대 학문이란 낯선 조류(潮流) 앞에서 선택한 대응 방식은 도리어 근대 학문에 직접 ‘투신’함으로써 부정성과 함께 머물고 궁극적으로 그 부정성을 초월하려는 분투였다는 것이다. 이에 이 글에서는 이상이 근대 학문의 부정성에 ‘투신’한 결과를 ‘과학’, ‘수학’, ‘의학’을 중심으로 증명하고자 하였다. 그중에서도 ‘과학’과 ‘수학’은 이론적 초월을 통해서, ‘의학’은 실천적 행위를 통해서 학문적 부정성을 극복하고자 하였음을 보였다.

영문 초록

In Lee Sang’s Poetry, various modern studies appear frequently. These modern academic theories are not just used as poetical rhetoric, but operated as a major methodology or important motif. However, the Lee Sang’s attitude that he deliberately used some modern academic theories in his poetry contradicts the fact that he has expressed antipathy to modern studies. Therefore, the current article tried to think his attitude as some efforts to overcome the negativity of modern studies because he could not avoid or reject the negativity as a genuine modern subject. It could be called ‘devotion’. This devotional attitude was consistent with Hegel’s contemplation about subjective role in the transition period to a new era. Hegel’s subjectivity was not ignoring the negative but some kind of magic that changes that negativity into a true ‘being’ by facing and tarrying with it. Eventually, Lee Sang showed his will to immerse himself in modern studies by using their negative, which was clearly the object of antipathy, and then struggled to transcend that negativity. Thus, this article tried to prove the fact that Lee Sang ‘devoted’ to the negative of the modern studies, focusing on ‘science’, ‘mathematics’ and ‘medicine’. In the ‘science’ and ‘methematics’, he attempted to transcend theoretically in order to overcome the academic negative, and in the ‘medicine’, he tried to surmount it through practical actions.
