｢失花｣에 나타난 제임스 조이스의 창작방법 수용 양상 연구- ‘의식의 흐름’ 기법과 타 텍스트의 인유 양상을 중심으로

국문 초록

이 논문은 ｢失花｣에 나타난 제임스 조이스의 창작방법 수용 양상과 그것이 내포한 문학사적 의미를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 1930년대 조선 문인들은 식민지 아일랜드의 출신으로서 세계문단에서 인정받은 조이스의 문학적 위상과 ‘의식의 흐름’ 기법으로 대표되는 그의 창작방법을 집중적으로 조명하면서 적극적인 관심을 표출하였다. 박태원, 김기림 등 구인회 동인 역시 조이스의 세계문학적 위상과 실험적인 창작방법에 주목했는데, 이상은 조이스의 문학을 주시했던 당대 문단의 경향과 구인회의 각별한 관심을 토대로 조이스의 문학적 특징을 접했을 것으로 예상된다. 세계문학을 향한 열망 아래 새로운 창작방법을 모색했던 이상에게 식민지의 시대 인식을 현대적인 창작방법으로 실험했던 조이스의 문학적 특징은 중요한 전범이 되었을 것으로 판단된다. 이상은 ｢失花｣에서 조이스의 ‘의식의 흐름’ 기법을 수용하여 시공간을 넘나드는 분절적인 ‘나’의 내면을 구현하였다. ｢失花｣에 나타난 ‘의식의 흐름’ 기법은 독자의 몰입을 방해하고 텍스트와 비판적 거리감을 확보하게 함으로써 연애에 실패하고 동경행을 선택한 식민지 조선인 예술가가 무능한 자신의 정체성을 깨달아가는 자기 인식의 과정을 효과적으로 보여주었다. 독자들은 ‘의식의 흐름’ 기법으로 단절된 문맥을 재구성하면서 절망적 인식으로 귀착되는 ‘나’의 의식을 내밀하게 들여다볼 수 있었다. 이 밖에도 ｢失花｣에 전략적으로 배치된 타 텍스트의 인유 양상 역시 조이스의 창작방법과 관련되어 있었다. ｢失花｣에 인유된 소설, 영화, 노래 가사, 시 등의 타 텍스트는 본래의 의미를 보존하는 동시에 ‘나’의 상황과 밀접하게 연계되면서 중층적인 의미를 파생하였다. 이상은 ｢失花｣에서 조이스의 ‘의식의 흐름’ 기법과 타 텍스트를 인유하는 창작방법을 토대로 ‘나’의 의식에 투영된 식민지의 시대 인식을 표출하고 있었다. 문학사적 관점에서 이상의 제임스 조이스의 창작방법 수용은 식민지의 시대 인식을 세계문학의 현대적 창작방법으로 구현하는 토대를 마련했다는 점에서 의의가 발견된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the acceptance patterns of James Joyce’s creative techniques in Lee Sang’s A Lost Flower and also meanings connoted in them in the history of literature. In the 1930s, literary figures of Joseon showed their active interest in the literary status of Joyce, who was from colonial Ireland and recognized in the world literary circles, and also his creative methods represented by ‘stream of consciousness,’ shedding intensive light on them. The Circle of Nine including Park Tae-won and Kim Gi-rim focused on his status in the world literature and experimental creative methods. Lee Sang must have been exposed to his literary characteristics based on the tendency of the literary circles that kept an eye on Joyce’s literature and the particular interest that the Circle of Nine took in it. It is likely that the literary characteristics of Joyce, who conducted an experiment with the awareness of the times in the colony in creative modern methods, offered an important example to Lee Sang that explored new creative methods for his aspiration for world literature. Lee Sang embodied the inside of segmental ‘I’ that moved between time and space by accepting Joyce’s ‘stream of consciousness’ technique in A Lost Flower. The ‘stream of consciousness’ technique disturbed the immersion of readers and ensured a critical sense of distance with the texts, thus showing effectively incompetent the self-awareness process of an artist from colonial Joseon choosing to fly to Tokyo after failing in love and realizing. Readers were able to take an intimate look at the consciousness of ‘I’ that was concluded into desperate awareness by reorganizing segmented contexts in the ‘stream of consciousness’ technique. The allusion patterns of other texts arranged strategically in A Lost Flower were also related to Joyce’s creative methods. Other texts alluded in A Lost Flower such as novels, movies, lyrics, and poems preserved their original meanings and, at the same time, were closely related to ‘my’ situations, generating multi-layered meanings. In his A Lost Flower, Lee Sang expressed the colony’s awareness of the times projected into ‘my’ consciousness based on Joyce’s ‘stream of consciousness’ technique and his creative method of allusion to other methods. In the viewpoint of literary history, Lee Sang’s acceptance of Joyce’s creative methods holds significance as a basis to embody the awareness of the times in the colony in the creative modern methods of world literature.
