국문 초록

지구생태계가 훼손되고 쓰레기로 뒤덮인 바다를 마주하고 있는 현재, 전 세계적인 환경운동을 일으킨 레이첼 카슨(Rachel Carson, 1907-1964)의 바다 생태론은 인간 중심적인 삶을 돌아보게 한다. 카슨은 미국 어류·야생동물국(FWS-Fish and Wildlife Service) 해양생물학 담당 공무원으로 일하면서 『바닷바람을 맞으며』(Under the Sea Wind, 1941), 『우리를 둘러싼 바다』(The Sea Around Us, 1951)를 출간했다. 바다 생태 전문작가로 유명해진 후, 카슨은 『바다의 가장자리』(The Edge of the Sea,1955)를 출간하여 바다 3부작을 완결했다. 본고는 카슨이 이 바다 3부작에서 밝힌 ‘생명의 위대한 어머니인 바다’ 속 생명의 신비한 흐름과 우주적 작용에 대해 고찰한다. 바다에 깃들어 살아가는 다양한 바다생물들, 바다의 물리·화학·생물·지질학적 특성들, 밀물과 썰물의 변화무쌍한 리듬 속에서 갈등과 타협과 삶의 본능이 아우성치는 해안들을 탐색할 것이다. 이를 통해 오늘날 심각하게 오염되고 죽어가는 바다 생태의 참 모습을 회복하기 위해 현대인이 반성하고 실천해야 할 과제를 제시한다.

영문 초록

The balance in the global eco-system has been damaged. We find the ocean covered with garbage and plastic and ocean trash is one of the world s biggest pollution problems. In this fatal situation, Rachel Carson s marine biology may help us to reflect on our journey of androcentric life. In 1935 Carson was hired by the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries that later became the FWS(U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), where she authored many bulletins. Carson s first book, Under the Sea Wind, was published in 1941. Her second book, The Sea Around Us(1951), was published and eventually translated into 32 languages. With this success she resigned from the FWS and devoted her time to writing. In 1955 she published The Edge of the Sea and her ocean trilogy completed with this book. This article examines the mysterious flow of life and cosmic operation in the sea as the great mother of life that Carson revealed in her ocean trilogy. To this purpose, the various sea creatures and the physical, chemical, biological, and geological characteristics of the sea will be explored. Finally, I will suggest some tasks that we should reflect and practice in order to restore severely polluted marine ecosystems.
