‘안용복 밀사’설에 관한 비판적 고찰

국문 초록

이 글은 1696년 안용복이 권력자의 밀명을 띠고 특수 임무를 수행하기 위해 도일했다는 ‘안용복 밀사’설을 비판적으로 검토한 것이다. ‘안용복 밀사’설은 남구만이 안용복을 밀사로 보냈다는 설(①)과 남구만과 윤지완이 공조하여 보냈다는 설(②)로 나뉜다. ①의 주요 논지는 조선 정부가 쓰시마번이 아닌 다른 노선을 통해 외교노선을 새로 개척하기 위해 안용복을 보내 돗토리번에 쓰시마번의 비리를 고발하게 했으나, 쓰시마번의 방해로 결국 막부에 보고되지 못했다는 것이다. 그러나 이런 주장은 안용복의 도일 목적이 무엇인지, 그가 어떤 형태로 쓰시마번의 비리를 고발했는지가 명확하지 않다. ②의 주요 논지는 당시 정파 간의 인식 차이가 커서 공식 사행을 파견하기가 어려웠기 때문에 정쟁을 피하면서 외교 현안을 해결하기 위해 밀사를 파견했다는 것이다. 그러나 이 주장은 정파 간 인식 차이가 무엇인지, 밀사 파견의 배경은 무엇인지, 파견을 계획한 시기는 언제인지, 안용복이 칭한 관직이 밀사로서 적합한지, 안용복과 그 일행의 신분은 임무 수행에 적합한지, 국왕인 숙종은 어떻게 관련 있는지, 일본 측은 밀사를 어떻게 받아들였는지 등에 관한 내용이 불분명하다. 조선은 밀사를 파견하지 않고도 직접 사신을 보내 쓰시마번의 행태를 막부에 알릴 수 있었다. 그런데 왜 굳이 자격이 의심스런 안용복을 보냈어야 하는지 그 당위성이 ‘안용복 밀사’설에서는 드러나지 않는다. ‘안용복 밀사’설은 사료 인용에 있어서도 개인 문집이나 2차 문헌을 이용했고, 구절의 일부를 뽑아 무리하게 밀사설과 엮은 측면이 있다.

영문 초록

This article intends to examine the hypothesis about Ahn Yong-bok emissary. The hypothesis about Ahn Yong-bok emissary is that in 1696, Ahn Yong-bok went to Japan to receive a secret order from a powerful man and perform a special mission. A hypothesis about Ahn Yong-bok emissary is divided into the view that Nam Gu-man sent Ahn Yong-bok to emissaries(①)and that Nam Gu-man and Yoon Ji-wan cooperated(②). The main argument of ① is that the Korean government sent Ahn Yong-bok to Tottori-han to accuse of corruption in order to open a new diplomatic route through a line other than Tsushima-han, but was not reported to Edo Shogunate due to Tsushima-han s obstruction. The main point of ② was that the sentiment of Ahn Yong-bok was escorted to solve diplomatic issues with Japan while avoiding political conflict because it was difficult to officially send resignations due to the large differences in perceptions between political factions in Korea. However, this claim is not clear. First, it is not clear what is the difference in perception between political factions. Second, it is not clear what is the background of dispatching emissary, and when is Nam Gu-man planning to send emissary. Third, it is not clear how the king is involved in this matter. Finally, it is not clear how the Japanese accepted emissaries. Joseon government could send a envoy directly to inform the Edo Shogunate of the behavior of Tsushima-han by not sending emissaries. However, the justification for why Ahn Yong-bok should have sent a questionable question is not revealed in the hypothesis of emissary. A hypothesis about emissary used personal citations or secondary literature in the citation of historical sources, and some parts of the verses were overly woven with hypothesis about emissary.
