An Increase of the Papers with Multiple Corresponding Authors: A Global Trend That Includes an Inappropriate Authorship Practice in a Certain Local Academy

국문 초록

근래 과학 학술지에서 교신저자가 여러 명인 논문(공동교신 논문)이 늘고 있다. 이는 공동연구의 증가에 기인한 현상일 수 있겠지만, 그 증가속도가 매우 빨라서 혹시나 교신저자의 정당성과 가치가 변하거나 훼손되는 것은 아닌지 우려를 낳고 있다. 이 연구는 이공계 논문에서 공동교신 저자의 경향이 얼마나 광범위하고 건전하게 진행되고 있는지를 조사하였다. 공동교신 논문의 급격한 증가 추세는 2008-09년과 2018-2019년에 미국, 일본, 한국, 중국, 4개 국가의 학자들이 발표한 논문을 SCOPUS index(www.scopus.com)에서 분석한 결과 확인되었다. 그러나 그 증가의 폭은 국가에 따라서 크게 차이가 나며, 한국과 중국의 경우에서 현저히 높았고, 이들 국가에서 공동교신 저자가 자신의 기관에서 유일하게 저자로 등재된 논문의 수도 훨씬 더 많았다. 현실을 확인하기 위해서 한국 학자들을 대상으로 공동교신의 경향에 대한 실태조사를 행하였다. 응답자의 64% 이상이 교신저자가 여러 명인 논문에 참여한 경험이 있다고 답했으며, 22%는 자신이 참여한 논문에서 공동교신 저자가 교신저자로서의 역할을 하지 않았다고 답하였다. 이들이 교신저자로 등재된 경위에 대해서는 친구를 자신의 논문에 공동교신 저자로 등재해주는 교신저자 교환의 관행이나, 다양한 명분의 예우 차원의 교신저자 등재 관행들이 지적되었다. 교신저자 배정의 문제는 주로 학술지 편집인의 관심사라고 할 수 있지만, 교신저자에 관련한 부적절한 관행과 자격 오용의 가능성은 한국 뿐 아니라 국제 학계에서의 관심을 촉구하며, 또한 공동의 인식과 대응의 필요성을 제시한다.

영문 초록

Recently, papers with multiple corresponding authors (co-correspondence) are frequently noticed in scientific journals. This is a trend that parallels a significant increase in research collaboration, but its rapidity raises concern about whether the legitimacy and value of the corresponding authorship are changing or even damaged. This study investigated how extensive and sound the trend of co-correspondence in science and engineering is. The increasing trend of co-correspondence papers was confirmed by examining SCOPUS index (www.scopus.com) for the papers published by scholars of the USA, Japan, South Korea, and China in 2008-09 and 2018-2019. The number of co-correspondence papers indeed increased in all four countries. However, the numbers varied significantly among the countries, markedly higher in South Korea and China cases, which also showed far higher numbers of the papers with a co-corresponding author who is the only member from his group. To dig into reality, South Korean scholars were surveyed with questionnaires regarding the trend of co-correspondence. Over 64% of respondents answered that they had participated in papers where multiple corresponding authors are listed, and 22% of them thought that the co-corresponding author did not play his due role and the co-corresponding authorship was exchanged between friends or given as a courtesy for various reasons. Although corresponding authorship allocation is majorly a concern for journal editors, a trend of inappropriate practices or misuse of co-corresponding authorship calls for local and global academic community awareness.
