Instructional Use of TED Talks in Business English

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 성인 학습자를 대상으로 의사소통 영어능력 향상을 위해 TED Talk비디오를 사용하여 말하기 능력과 학습자들의 인식에 대해 살펴보았다. 수업시간에 비디오를 여러 번 시청 후에 스크립트에 제공된 단어와 표현들을 익힌 후 본 내용을 요약하거나 결말에 대해 토론을 하였다. 이런 방식의 비디오 사용의 수업을 일주일에 두 번 6주 동안 실시한 후 학습자들의 말하기 능력 향상을 살펴보았다. 6주라는 짧은 기간 동한 학습자들의 영어 능력 수준에 변화가 없었지만 설문조사에서는 학습자로부터 긍정적 인 반응을 얻었다. 학습자들은 미디어 사용이 흥미롭고 효과적이라는 것을 알았고 앞으로도 계속 사용하기를 원했다. 이런 미디어 사용 전략을 오랜 기간 동안 사용하면 학습자들의 영어 실력이 향상 될 것으로 기대되어진다.

영문 초록

In seeking to improve a Business English program at a company headquartered in the Republic of Korea, media use in the form of TED Talk videos was used instructionally. These videos added valuable listening practice to the English lessons and provided authentic discussion topics, both of which worked to meet the program’s goals involving English communication improvement. The videos were watched multiple times during class, with vocabulary and phrases highlighted on a provided script. Discussion occurred throughout the videos and following. The effectiveness of this strategy was measured via oral assessments and learner surveys, with results as follows. The assessments showed no change in English skill level, due in part to the limited amount of time with the instruction, but the surveys showed a positive response from learners. Overwhelmingly, the learners found the TED Talks interesting and effective, and wished to continue their use into the future. Given a sufficiently long period with the instructional strategy, it is believed that its use would result in English skill improvements.
