원효의 『무량수경종요』와 『아미타경소』는 어떻게 다른가

국문 초록

원효의 정토사상은 그동안 『유심안락도』에 집중해서 연구가 이루어졌다. 하지만 『유심안락도』가 원효의 저술이 아니라는 주장이 유력해지면서, 원효의 정토사상에 대한 국내 연구는 부족한 편이다. 그렇다면 그의 저서인 『무량수경종요』와 『아미타경소』를 거시적 안목으로 들여다보는 작업이 필요하지 않나 생각한다. 『아미타경소』에는 『무량수경종요』의 내용이 다수 요약된 형태로 들어 있다 보니, 흔히 『아미타경소』를 『무량수경종요』의 축약본이라고 여기는 듯하다. 하지만, 자세히 들여다보면 이 두 문헌은 각기 다른 저술 목적과 내용을 가지고 있음을 알 수 있다. 『무량수경종요』는 왕상회향(往相迴向)에 중점을 두고 왕생자와 왕생 조건 등을 자세히 서술하고 있다. 내용이 다소 길어서인지 『무량수경』에 대한 문해석(文解釋)은 없다. 반면, 『아미타경소』는 문해석이 중심이다. 세친의 『정토론』을 다수 인용하여 극락의 이종청정(二種淸淨)을 밝히고, 환상회향(還相廻向)까지 이야기하고 있다. 따라서 『무량수경종요』는 왕생하고자 하는 사람에 초점을 맞추고, 『아미타경소』는 왕생한 후의 일에 중점을 둔다. 그럼에도 두 문헌이 공통된 주제를 가지고 있기에 같은 내용 속에서 이러한 다름을 어떻게 보이는지 알아보고자 했다. 더불어 이 두 문헌의 내용을 통해 『무량수경종요』가 『아미타경소』보다 먼저 저술되었음을 알 수 있었고, 원효의 정토사상에도 변화가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

The research on Wŏnhyo’s Pure Land Buddhism has been mainly focused on Yusim anrakto [遊心安樂道]. Since Yusim anrakto had been confirmed not his masterpiece, nevertheless, the research on Wŏnhyo’s Pure Land Buddhism in Korea became short. Therefore Wŏnhyo’s Murangsugyŏng-Chongyo and Amit’agyŏeng-So should be studied with broader understanding. Until now, generally, Amit’agyŏeng-So had been considered as an abstract of Murangsugyŏng-Chongyo. With reading in detail, however, each context has the identical subject and contents. Murangsugyŏng-Chongyo emphasizes the Dedication to rebirth to Pure Land[往相迴向] and explain about the beings to rebirth and its condition. There is not interpretation about Murangsugyŏng [larger Sukhāvatīvyūha-sūtra], not sure but long contents can be the reason. On the other hand Amit’agyŏeng-So mainly explains through Amit’agyŏeng [smaller Sukhāvatīvyūha- sūtra]. Wŏnhyo quoted Vasubandhu’s Sukhāvaṭvyūhasūtropadeśa to account for two-kind-of-Purification of Pure Land including the Dedication to liberate the sentient being after rebirth in the Pure Land[還相廻向]. As a conclusion, the subject of Murangsugyŏng-Chongyo is about the beings who eager to rebirth in Pure Land; Amit’agyŏeng-So is about the beings who desire to liberate suffering beings after given rebirth in Pure Land. In spite of that, these contexts have some of common themes based on different subjects. This thesis tried to explain the differences among common themes. Plus the fact is found that Murangsugyŏng-Chongyo is followed by Amit’agyŏeng-So ; Wŏnhyo’s thought of Pure Land Buddhism had been altered through two contexts.
