국문 초록

18세기에 간행된 수많은 승려문집의 문학적 성취를 논하는 데 있어 동계경일의 『동계집』은 빼놓을 수 없는 작품이다. 그는 불교전기소설 창작을 통해 현실 문제를 고발한 흔치 않은 승려작가였음에도, 그의 작품에 대한 학계의 연구는 미비하다고 할 수 있다. 때문에 본고는 경일의 불교우언 작품인 ｢주인옹퇴오객설｣을 면밀히 살펴 그 문학적 의미를 새기고, 경일 연구의 마중물이 되는 것에 목적이 있다. ｢주인옹퇴오객설｣은 16세기에 유행한 심성소설의 영향을 받은 것으로 보인다. 의인화된 심성의 인물이 등장하며, 구성상으로는 오객이 가전양식을 차용하여 주인옹에게 자신의 이야기를 전하는 것이 특징이다. 또 이야기의 끝에 주인옹이 등장인물을 호명하며 개인의 이야기를 마무리 짓고 있는데, 이때 인물의 개성을 살린 호명을 통해 작가의 어희적 태도를 엿볼 수 있다. 인물들의 형상은 가전의 전통적인 서술에서 벗어나 각자의 특징에 따라 확장되거나 축소되는 경향을 보이는데, 이 같은 서술방식은 다섯 인물의 다양한 양상을 더욱 효과적으로 드러낸다. 무엇보다 이 작품은 유가와 교류했던 불가의 승려들이 단순히 그들의 취향에 맞는 글을 생산했던 것이 아니라, 불가의 사상을 드러낸 개성적인 작품이라는 점과, 불가에서 찾아보기 힘든 인물의 타자화를 이용한 자기서사라는 점에서 의미가 있다. 또한 당시대에 유래되어 사회문화적 쟁점이 되었던 사물을 오객 중 하나로 입전시켜 그의 일생을 서사적으로 풀어낸 경일의 참신한 시선도 주목할 만하다.

영문 초록

『Donggyejip』 is a anthology of writings by Gyeongil, a Buddhist monk who was worked in the 17th century. As a Buddhist, Gyeongil was fluent in Confucian, Buddhism, and Taoism so he interacted with literary man. His literary works are characterized by a Taoism tendency. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the publication of Buddhist writings became active. It is said that the Buddhist monks created poetry and literature as a result of the Buddhist monks constant efforts for exchange between Confuciansim and Buddhism. However, there are criticisms that it has been enriched with literary works that suit the tastes of the Gentry. In addition, while following the writing of Confucian writers, there are cases in which literary writers reveal their individuality. The personification of emotions was a fashion for Confucian literature writers in the 16th century. ｢Juinongtoeogaekseol｣ seems to have been affected. The owner and five guests are expressing emotions personified. Emotions are personified and expressed as The owner and five guests. However, it is short in length to compare with emotional novels and is heterogeneous in terms of subject matter. The characters are all have distinct personalities. The artist describes them in three dimensions, and the reader infers their identity. In particular, the fifth guest is significant in that it was a popular cigarette at that time. Through this study, I was able to examine the allegory of this literary work. In addition, it is significant that we can get a glimpse of Gyeongil literature through new literary works.
