신문화사로서 홀로코스트 문학

국문 초록

‘홀로코스트 문학’은 홀로코스트라는 구체적인 현대적 사건을 소재와 주제로 삼는다는 점에서 역사적인 요소와 성격을 많이 내포하는 문학 장르다. 즉 이 장르에서는 ‘문학’보다도 ‘역사’에 더 많은 방점이 찍힌다. 그러나 사정이 이러한데도 홀로코스트 문학은 그동안 사료로 또는 사서로 인정받지못하면서 제도권 역사학계 안에서 거의 주목받지도 못했고 연구되지도 못했다. 이 논문은 이러한 사정을 감안해 홀로코스트 문학작품, 특히 생존작가의 회고록이나 전기를, 역사학 연구를 위한 자료나 역사서로 읽을 여지가있는지 여부를 검토하고자 했다. 이 작업을 위해서 필자는 빅토어 프랑클의『죽음의 수용소에서』, 장 아메리의 『죄와 속죄의 저편』, 루트 클뤼거의『삶은 계속된다』 등 세 명의 홀로코스트 생존작가들의 회고록 세 편을엄선했다. 연구 결과, 이들 세 문학작품이 각각 ‘일상사’, ‘심성사’, ‘미시사’ 라는, 20세기 후반에 사회사에 대한 반발로 등장한 신문화사의 연구 조류와합치하거나 그 조류에 근접해 있는 작품들로 독해될 수 있다는 점을 확인했다. 분명 홀로코스트 문학작품을 신문화사적 역사서로 단정 짓는 것은 무리일지 모른다. 하지만 이들 작품은 최소한 홀로코스트 연구를 위한, 신문화사적 사료나 사서에 근접한 인문학 자료로 간주되어야 한다.

영문 초록

‘Holocaust Literature’ contains more historical elements and characteristics than any other literary genre because it uses a specific modern event called the Holocaust as its source and subject. In other words, in this genre, more emphasis is placed on ‘history’ than ‘literature’. However, despite these circumstances, Holocaust literature has not been recognized as a historical document or as a history book, and has received little attention and has been rarely studied in the historical academia. In view of these circumstances, this article attempted to examine whether there is room for reading Holocaust literature, especially memoirs or biographies of surviving writers, as materials for historical research or as history books. For this work, I carefully selected three memoirs of Holocaust surviving writers: Victor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning, Jean Améry’s Jenseits von Schuld und Sühne, and Ruth Klüger’s weiter leben. Eine Jugend. As a result of the study, it was found that these three literary works can be read as works that are correspond to or close to ‘the history of everyday life’ (Alltagsgeschichte), ‘the history of mentalities’ (histoire des mentalités), and ‘microhistory’ (microstoria), respectively: to ‘the new cultural history’ which appeared in the late 20th century as a reaction to ‘social history’. Obviously, it may be exaggerative to conclude that these Holocaust memoirs are works of the new cultural history. However, these works should be regarded, at least, as historical sources for the study of the Holocaust or as humanities works close to history books.
