영문 초록

The topic of this paper is the relation between the doctrine of creation ex nihilo (creation out of nothing) and Big Bang cosmology. It focuses on two distinct areas of cosmology, the beginning of the universe at ‘t=0’ and the Anthropic Principle as a response to the remarkable ‘fine-tuning’ of the laws and constants of physics required for the possibility of the evolution of life in the universe. It is, thus, a central and key topic in the burgeoning interdisciplinary field of theology and science. I start with a brief look at the theology of creation ex nihilo: its historical background and its relation to the idea of an absolute beginning of time. I then describe the scientific ‘winding road’ to Big Bang cosmology and discuss the two scientific topics: t=0 and fine-tuning; the Anthropic Principle. Next I present the views of several key contributors to the field of theology and science about the relevance of t=0 to the doctrine of creation ex nihilo and categorized in terms of ‘completely irrelevant’, (Langdon Gilkey, Arthur Peacocke), ‘directly relevant’ (Ted Peters), and ‘indirectly relevant’ (Ian Barbour, Ernan McMullin, Wolfhart Pannenberg, Hyung-Joo Lee, and myself). I characterize this third view using a term from McMullin, ‘consonance’. Then I turn to the topic of the Anthropic Principle and present my views on the early conversations in the 1980s about the Anthropic Principle followed by recent scientific research on inflationary Big Bang, eternal inflation and the multiverse and their ongoing implications for creation theology. After a brief nod to the massive ‘dissonance’ between the far future portrayed by Big Bang cosmology and Christian eschatology I offer a summary of the paper.
