국문 초록

본 논문은 성 토마스의 사상을 종합적으로 제시하는 그의 대표작인 『신학대전』을 통해 인간 의지의 본성과 역할에 대한 고찰을 시도했다. 성 토마스는 이 작품을 통해 인간을 자신의 최종 목적을 향해 현세 여정을 걷는 ‘나그네’(viator)로 보았다. 그가 추구하는 최종 목적은 하느님의 본질을 관상하는 지복직관(visio beatifica)이자 하느님과의 사랑의 합일로, 이는 하느님께서 그를 위해 영원으로부터 예정하신 목적이다. 인간은 이 목적에 이르게 될 때 영원한 진리이자 최고선이신 하느님을 향유(享有)하는 가운데 자기 존재의 충만에 이르게 될 것이다. 성 토마스는 이러한 과정에서 인간의 의지가 수행하는 역할에 주목하면서 의지의 중요성을 강조한 바 있다. 의지는 인간이 최종 목적을 향해 실제로 나아가게 해주는 역동적 능력으로서, 하느님과의 충만한 사랑의 합일에 이르도록 그분과의 인격적 관계의 성장을 도모하게 하는 핵심 기관이다. 또한, 지성으로 하여금 하느님의 빛을 수용하도록 그의 본성을 준비시켜 준다. 그럼으로써 그가 하느님에 대한 지복직관에 이르게 해준다. 이런 의미에서 의지는 인간을 향한 하느님의 사랑을 드러내는 표지이자 선물이다. 또한, 그것은 인간 편에서 완수해야 할 요청이자 과제로 드러난다. 성 토마스는 창조의 핵심적 개념으로 ‘관계’를 들었다. 이 관계는 하느님의 자유로운 사랑과 호의에 근거해서 피조물을 향해 건네는 하느님의 무상적이고 일방적인 관계를 말한다. 지성적 피조물인 인간은 현세 여정을 통해 자신의 의지와 더불어 이러한 하느님의 관계에 응답해 감으로써 이 관계를 완성해 나가도록 초대받았다. 더 나아가, 지복직관으로 이해된 최종 목적을 향한 여정에서 인간은 하느님께서 무상으로 선사하시는 ‘영광의 빛’에 의해 조명된 의지를 통해 이 초자연적 은총을 수용하는 가운데 인간의 신적 변모를 준비한다. 한 마디로, 의지는 최종 목적을 향해 걷는 ‘나그네’ 인간이 하느님께 이르도록 그를 인도하며 이를 위해 하느님의 은총 작용에 자신을 내어 맡기게 한다. 바로 여기에 의지가 ‘나그네’인 인간에게 선물로 주어진 본래의 의미가 있다. 그러므로 의지는 인간을 향한 하느님의 예정 계획 아래 자신을 충만하게 실현하는 과정에서 인간이 하느님의 대화 상대자이자 파트너로 부름받았다는 그의 신적 품위와 성소를 드러낸다.

영문 초록

This thesis attempts to examine the nature and role of human will through St. Thomas’ representative work Summa Theologiae which comprehensively presents St. Thomas’ ideas. Through this work, St. Thomas viewed humans as a ‘traveler’ on his journey to the world toward his final purpose. His final purpose is to see the nature of God and to unify his love with God, which is God’s purpose from eternity. When man reaches this end, he will be filled with his existence while enjoying God, the eternal truth and supreme good. St. Thomas emphasized the importance of will, noting the role played by human will in this process. Will is a dynamic ability that actually drives man toward his final purpose, and is a key faculty that promotes the growth of personal relationships with God to reach the unity of full love with him. Also, it prepares intelligence for human nature to embrace the light of God. By doing so, will leads the intelligence to reach the ‘visio beatifica’. In this sense, will is a sign and a gift that reveals God’s love for man. Also, it turns out to be a request and task to complete on the part of humans. St. Thomas mentioned ‘relationship’ as a key concept of creation. This relationship refers to God’s free and one-sided relationship with his creatures based on his free love and goodwill. An intelligent creature, man was invited to complete this relationship by responding to God’s will and this relationship with God through the journey of this world. Furthermore, on the journey to the final purpose, understood as the ‘visio beatifica’, humans prepare for the divine transformation, accepting the supernatural grace through the will illuminated by the ‘light of glory’ that God presents him for free. In short, will leads a ‘traveler’ man to walk toward his final purpose to reach God and entrusts himself to the work of God’s grace. Here is the original meaning that the will was given as a gift to a man who was a ‘traveler’. Therefore, will reveals his divine dignity and vocation that man was called God’s interlocutor and partner in the process of realizing himself fully under God’s predestination for him.
