대승불교의 지관(止觀)명상과 그리스도교의 향심(向心)기도

국문 초록

본고는 향심기도를 불교의 지관명상과 비교함으로써 만날 수 있는 가능성과 차이점에 대해 고찰하고자 한다. 불교 명상이나 향심기도 모두 ‘사고로부터의 자유’를 지향하며 사유로부터 자유로워지기 위해 양 종교 모두 ‘믿음’에 기반을 두고 있다. 대승불교의 명상은 진여(眞如)에 대한 신심에 기반을 두지만 그 신심을 불러일으키는 주체 역시 ‘진여’라는 특징을 지닌다. 이에 반해 향심기도에서는 하느님에 대한 믿음에 근거하고 있으며 그 믿음은 우리 자신에 의해서가 아니라 하느님께서 우리로 하여금 믿음을 일으키도록 하셨다는 데 있다. 이렇듯 그리스도교의 믿음은 하느님께로부터 온 데 비해 진여에 대한 신심은 중생심 그 자체로부터 왔다는 점에서 차이점도 보이고 있다. 그리스도교의 향심기도는 성령께서 내 안에서 활동하실 수 있도록 전적으로 성령께 자신을 내어맡긴다. 그런 점에서 향심기도는 수동적 정화과정이라 할 수 있다. 지관명상 역시 능동적인 노력으로 깨달음에 도달하는 것이 아니라 생각을 그치고 고요에 머물러 진여의 지혜가 작용하도록 자신의 의식을 내려놓는다는 점에서 수동적인 면이 있다. 또한 그리스도교의 기도는 궁극적으로 하느님과의 일치를 지향하는데 반해, 대승불교명상은 중생심이 곧 진여임을 자각함에 있다는 점에서도 차이점을 보인다. 그럼에도 불구하고 향심기도가 궁극적으로 지향하는 바가 하느님을 더 깊이 만나기 위해 세상 가운데로 나아가야 하듯이, 지관명상이 지향하는 궁극적인 세계 역시 진여의 세계를 깨닫는 것에 머무르지 않고 자비행을 구현함에 있다는 점에서 양 종교는 다시 만나는 접점을 지닌다. 즉 그리스도교의 기도가 지향하는 바가 세상 안에서 하느님과의 일치라는 점이라면, 대승불교의 자신의 깨달음에 머무르지 않고, 자리이타(自利利他)적인 면으로 나아가기 때문이다. 이렇듯 불교의 명상이든 그리스도교의 기도이든 그 형태는 다르지만 믿음에 기반을 두고, 진여 혹은 하느님과의 일치를 지향한다는 점, 그리고 하느님과의 내적 일치이든, 깨달음이든 거기에 머물지 않고, 세상을 향한 사랑과 자비에로 나아가고자 한다는 점에서 궁극적으로 지향하는 바의 유사성을 지니고 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine the possible similarities and differences that can be encountered by comparing Centering Prayer of Christianity with Jigwan Meditation of Buddhism. Both the Buddhist meditation and Christian Centering Prayer aim for ‘freedom from thoughts’ and both religions are based on ‘faith’ in order to be free from thoughts. Meditation in Mahayana Buddhism is based on devotion to Jinyeo(眞如, Tathata, true suchness), but the subject that evokes that devotion is also characterized as Jinyeo . On the other hand, Centering Prayer is based on faith in God, and that faith is not by ourselves, but that God causes us to develop faith. Therefore, Christian faith is different in that it comes from God, whereas the devotion to Jinyeo comes from the mind of sentient beings(Jungsaengsim, 衆生心) itself. Christian Centering Prayer lets oneself entrust entirely to the Holy Spirit so that the Holy Spirit can work in that person. In this respect, it can be said that Centering Prayer is a passive purification process. Jigwan(止觀, Samadha-vipassana) Meditation also has a passive aspect in that it does not reach enlightenment through active efforts, but by stopping to think, staying in silence and putting down one s consciousness so that the wisdom of Jinyeo can work in a person. In addition, while Christian prayer ultimately aims for unity with God, Mahayana Buddhism meditation differs in the awareness that Jungsaengsim (the mind of sentient beings) is Jinyeo. Nevertheless, just as Centering Prayer aims to go deeper into the world in order to meet God in depth, the ultimate world that Jigwan Meditation pursues is not only realizing the world of Jinyeo, but also realizing compassion, and that is where both religions meet again. In other words, if Christian prayer aims to have unity with God in the world, Mahayana Buddhism also does not rest on one’s own enlightenment but proceeds to the aspect of ‘mutual benefit.’ Therefore, whether it is Buddhist meditation or Christian prayer, one aiming for Jinyeo and the other unity with God, they are both based on faith even if the form may be different. Furthermore, they do not remain there whether it is inner unity with God or enlightenment but want to go forward to love and show mercy to the world, and that is another similarity they share in their ultimate pursuit.
