국문 초록

청일전쟁에서 패배한 淸朝가 臺灣 본도와 澎湖列島를 할양하면서 대만은 일본의 식민지가 되었다. 일본은 대만의 역사와 문화, 언어, 풍속습관 및 사회상황이 일본과 다르다는 이유로 대만에서 반세기 동안 민족차별적인 식민통치를 수행하였다. 1910년에는 한국이 일본의 식민지로 전락하였다. 같은 운명에 처한 대만과 한국 사이에 이전에 비해 훨씬 활발한 인적, 물적 교류가 이루어지기 시작하였다. 일제시기 대만 정주 한인의 가장 큰 특징은 상업종사자의 비중이 월등하게 높다는 것이다. 일제시기 대만에 거주하던 한인 가운데 노동자나 농업종사자가 적었던 것은 당시 대만의 경제적, 사회적 환경의 영향 탓이었다. 기존의 경작지나 경작가능지는 모두 대만인이나 일본 관영이민자에 의해 선점된 대만에서, 이주한인이 농업에 종사할 여지는 거의 없었다. 1930년대에 접어들어 대만총독부가 이른바 ‘공업화’를 추진하면서 대만으로 이주하는 한인의 숫자가 이전에 비해 크게 늘어나기 시작하였다. 그럼에도 일제시기 대만 거주 한인 가운데 노동자의 비율은 시종 낮은 편에 속하였다. 대만 내 노동시장의 절대부분은 대만인 혹은 외국인으로 분류된 중국인(화교)이 장악하여 한인이 이들의 틈을 비집고 노동자로 자리하기 쉽지 않았기 때문이다.

영문 초록

As Qing lost the First Sino-Japanese War and ceded Taiwan andthe Penghu, or the Pescadores Islands, Taiwan became the colony ofJapan. For the reason that Taiwan has a different history, culture,language, customs, and social situations from its own, Japan executedthe ethnically discriminative colonial rule over Taiwan for half acentury. In 1910, Korea was degraded to the colony of Japan. Humanand material exchanges that were much vitalized than before startedto take place between Taiwan and Korea that shared the samedestiny.The most remarkable characteristics of Koreans who lived inTaiwan during the Japanese colonial period is that the percentage ofmerchants was extraordinarily high. The reason that laborers andfarmers were fewer among Koreans who lived in Taiwan during theJapanese colonial period is because of the influence of the economicand social environments of Taiwan at the time.As the Japanese General Government of Taiwan pursued so-called“industrialization” in the 1930s, the number of Koreans who emigrateto Taiwan dramatically increased. Nevertheless, the percentage oflaborers among the Koreans who lived in Taiwan during the Japanesecolonial period stayed relatively low. It is because it was not easy forKoreans to find jobs as the labor market in Taiwan was dominated byChinese who were categorized as foreigners or Taiwanese.Another characteristic of the society of Koreans who lived inTaiwan during the Japanese colonial period is that the percentage ofwomen around 20 years old was excessively high. This is thestatistics that are closely related to the fact that about half theKoreans who lived in Taiwan were categorized as commercialworkers.
