국문 초록

이 논문은 1925년에 행해진 밴팅의 노벨상 강연을 은유 분석의 관점에서 분석한다. 이 강연은 인슐린 발견과 정제의 중요성을 이 호르몬에 대한 연구와 임상기록을 통해 확증하려고 하며 다양한 표현 기법을 활용하여 청중이 당뇨병의 치료 수단으로서 인슐린의 효과에 주목하게 돕는다. 은유 분석은 강연에 나타난 언어적 은유를 통하여 개념적 은유를 살펴봄으로써 강연에서 강연자가 전달하고자 하는 핵심적인 메시지를 찾아낸다. 은유 분석에 따르면 이 강연은 당뇨병으로 유발되는 혈당의 문제를 부각하고 인체에 에너지를 공급하는 연료로서 탄수화물의 중요성을 주목할 뿐 아니라 탄수화물을 전환하는 인체의 능력을 ‘저항성’으로 인식함으로써 인슐린에 의한 탄수화물 저항성의 증진의 효과에 청중이 주목하게 하는 효과를 달성한다. 이로써 강연자는 자신의 수상 업적인 인슐린의 당뇨병에 대한 임상 효과의 가치를 극대화한다.

영문 초록

This article analyzes by means of metaphor analysis Frederic Banting s Nobel lecture delivered in 1925. This lecture intends to confirm the importance of finding and purifying insulin through investigative and clinical records regarding the hormone and by employing various expressive techniques helps the audience to take attention to the effects of insulin as cure for diabetes. The analysis of metaphor finds the speaker s rhetorical intention by examining the conceptual metaphors through linguistic metaphors in this lecture. This lecture highlights the problem of blood sugar caused by diabetes and not only pays attention to the importance of carbohydrates as a fuel that supplies energy to the human body, but also recognizes the body s ability to convert carbohydrates as tolerance . It achieves the effect of attracting audience s attention to its effect of increasing the tolerance. In this way, the speaker maximizes the value of the clinical effect of his award-winning insulin on diabetes.
