정서의 인지이론과 기독교적 정서 형성 교육

국문 초록

본 연구는 최근 뇌 과학과 인지심리학에서 진행되어 온 정서(af-fect)에 대한 연구들을 고찰하고 기독교적 가치체계를 반영한 정서(affect) 양육의 필요성을 재고하며 이를 위한 기독교적 형성 교육 방안을 모색해 보고자한다. 1960년대 이후 인지적 평가가 정서반응에 중요한 역할을 한다는 관점이 강조되면서 이에 대한 연구가 광범위하게 이루어지고 정서의 인지이론이 체계적으로 발달하였다. 특히 1980년대 이후, 양전자 방출 단층촬영술(PET), 기능적 자기공명 영상(fMRI), 뇌전도(EEG)등 의학 기술의 도움으로 정서에 대한 과학적 연구가 급속도로 발달하면서 현대 인지신경과학은 정서가 주의집중, 의미 만들기, 정보처리과정, 기억이나 의사결정 과정, 그리고 행동조절에 밀접히 연계되어 있음을 밝히고 있다. 이러한 연구결과는 감사(gratitude), 희망(hope), 평화(peace), 기쁨(joy), 뉘우침(contrition), 공감(compassion) 등 정서적 성숙과 실천을 성령의 열매로 여기는 기독교 교육 분야에 중대한 시사점을 제시한다. 인간은 천성적으로 의미를 추구하는 유기체로서, 자신의 가치와 목적에 따라 인생의 사건을 해석하고 상황을 평가하며 의미를 부여한다. 기독교인은 인생에 대한 고유한 믿음(belief)과 가치체계(value sys-tem)를 지니고 있으며, 이는 특정상황을 어떻게 해석할 것이며 어떤 정서를 어느 정도 강도로 느낄 것인가에 중대한 영향을 미친다. Robert C. Roberts는 기독교적 성장과 덕목은 정서적 영역에서의 성숙과 직결되어 있음을 강조한다. 성령의 열매와 기독교적 인격의 성숙은 공감, 연민, 감사, 배려, 평화, 사랑 등 적절한 정서적 표현과 실천으로 드러나야 하며, 기독교적 가치관에 기반을 둔 올바른 정서 반응은 거듭난 기독교인의, 더 나아가 성화된 기독교인의 표징이다. 바른 교리교육이나 성경적 지식 전수가 기독교교육의 중요한 부분이고 의식적인 교육행위를 통하여 성취될 수 있듯이, 기독교 가치-믿음 체계와 조화를 이루는 정서 반응 양식의 형성 역시 체계적으로 학습되고 양육되어야한다. 언제 기뻐하고 언제 분노하며 무엇을 수치스러워해야하는가를 습득하고 내면화하는 기독교적 정서체계의 형성은 기독교교육의 필수적인 한 영역이다. 기독교 가치관과 신념에 기초한 정서 학습은 기독교교리와 가치의 인지적 학습과 실천을 매개하는 중요한 교량 역할을 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This article reviews recent study on affect in brain science and cog-nitive psychology and then explores how to formulate and cultivate the Christian value and belief laden affective system through an inter-disciplinary dialogue between cognitive neuroscience and Christian education. In 1960s, appraisal theory of emotion which emphasizes influence of cognitive appraisal on emotion has been systematically developed. Moreover, since 1980s, the dramatic development of new technologies, including positron emission tomography (PET), func-tional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG) has enabled scientists to uncover the fundamental interaction between affect and cognition. Cognitive neuroscience demonstrates that affect and cognition are inextricably interrelated: cognitive facul-ties such as values, goals, motivation, and interpretation deeply im-pact the elicitation and the regulation of emotion. The cognitive-ap-praisal theory of emotion views the cognitive appraisal of objects or events as crucial to determine the type, intensity, and duration of emotional response. Emotions are based on interpretive perceptions, moral norms, and values. Christians have a distinctive value system. A change in value and motivation leads to a different appraisal of an emotion-evoked sit-uation that, once set, tends to play on different sensitivities, and thus on different modes of emotional expression. What we love, what we hate, when we rejoice, and how and what we fear, speak of who we truly are. Robert C. Roberts insists that Christian maturity and virtue should be demonstrated in affective responses such as empathy, grati-tude, hope, peace, joy, contrition, and compassion. In certain situ-ations, Christians may feel differently than non-believers because of their faith, beliefs, and values. Christian affective response can be learned and transformed through intentional and conscious edifica-tion grounded in Christian belief and value. I argues that fostering an affective disposition based on Christian values and beliefs contributes to growth in faith by connecting cognitive knowledge and practice. Christians need to learn what to fear, when to feel shame, and when to show compassion. The development of persistent Christian values and of persistent readiness to pursue emotional goals based on value is a crucial aspect in Christian formation and education.
