국문 초록

진번은 고조선과 흥망을 함께한 정치체로 고조선 다음으로 한국 고대에 등장한 국가였다. 진번 주민들은 韓 사회에도 적지않은 영향을 주었던 것으로 이해된다. 『史記』에 의하면 진번은 기원전 4~3세기 고조선과 함께 燕나라와 전쟁을 했으며 위만의 초기 거주지와도 관련된다. 고조선과 燕나라의 전쟁 기사에서 진번의 존재가 특별히 강조된 것은 당시 전쟁에서 진번의 위상이 그만큼 컸기 때문이라고 볼 수 있다. 진번은 당시 조선 주변의 유력한 정치체로 燕나라 및 주변 예맥계 집단과 활발히 교류했던 것으로 보인다. 진번의 위치에 대한 상이한 기록들은 진번이 이동했다는 관점에서 이해한다면 합리적으로 파악할 수 있다. 진번은 본래 요동군 번한현과 관련되어 요동 북부에 위치했으나 燕나라의 공격을 받아 황해도 지역으로 이동하게 된 것으로 보인다. 위만은 요동의 옛 진번지역을 기반으로 성장하여 고조선의 준왕을 몰아냈으며 漢나라의 지원을 받은 뒤에 황해도 지역의 진번을 복속시켰다. 이후 진번은 위만조선에 복속되었다가 漢나라에 멸망하게 된다. 漢나라는 진번 지역에 진번군을 설치하는데 진번군은 기원전 108년 설치되어 기원전 82년에 폐지되었다. 『茂陵書』의 진번군에 15현이 있었다는 기록은 받아들이기 어려우며 한군현의 남쪽 경계는 황해도 일대로 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

Jinbeon is a polity that shared its rise and fall with Old Joseon, and was a state that emerged following Old Joseon in the ancient history of Korea. It seems that after the fall of Jinbeon, its inhabitants moved southwards, and influenced the society of Han(韓) as well. According to Shiji(史記), Jinbeon(眞蕃), together with Old Joseon(古朝鮮), waged war against Yan Kingdom(燕國) in the 4th-3rd century BC, and also has connection with Wiman’s initial habitation. The special emphasis on the existence of Jinbeon laid by the article on the war between Yan Kingdom and Old Joseon suggests such a great status of Jinbeon in the war. It appears that Jinbeon, which was an influential polity around Old Joseon at that time, actively interacted with Yan Kingdom and surrounding groups of Yemaek(濊貊) extraction as well as Old Joseon. Records of different descriptions about the location of Jinbeon may be reasonably understood from the fact that Jinbeon was moved. Jinbeon was originally related to Fanhan County(番汗縣) in Liaodong Commandery(遼東郡), and was located in the west of Quian Shan Mountains(千山山脈); however, it seems that it was moved to the region of Hwanghaedo due to the attack of Yan Kingdom. Wiman Joseon grew with the old Jinbeon region as its stronghold, and ousted the King Jun of Old Joseon, and subjugated Jinbeon in the region of Hwanghae-do after obtaining support from the Han(漢) dynasty. Jinbeon, which was subjugated by Wiman Joseon, was later conquered by the Han Dynasty. The Han Dynasty established Jinbeon Commandery in the region of Jinbeon; the Jinbeon Commandery was established in 108 BC and was abolished in 82 BC. However, it is unclear whether the Han Dynasty established a commandery or a county even in the region of Jinbeon amidst unstable circumstances during the early period of its establishing commanderies and counties.
