국문 초록

이 글에서는 「광개토왕비」의 영락 9년과 10년조를 ‘백제·가야·왜 연합’의 대응으로 이해하려는 관점에 대해 재검토하였다. 4세기 후반 고구려와 백제의 대립구도로 인해 가야 제국은 백제, 왜와의 우호관계를 바탕으로 고구려, 신라와 대립하였던 것으로 파악되었다. 하지만 이는 일부의 가야 세력의 대외활동을 가야 전체로 이해했기 때문에 가야 제국의 실상을 왜곡할 여지가 있다. 가야 제국은 단일한 정치체가 아니었고, 당시 구심 역할을 하는 중심국의 여부도 불확실하다. 4세기 후반 가야 각국의 대외교섭은 다양하게 진행되었는데, 백제·왜와 이해관계가 같지 않았던 가야 세력을 상정할 수도 있다. 가야사 연구에서는 400년 고구려군의 남정에서 가야 각국의 동향을 달리 이해하고 있기에 전쟁의 피해를 입은 지역은 연구자에 따라 다르게 파악한다. 그러므로 400년 고구려군의 남정을 백제, 왜와의 관계에서만 분석하는 것은 당시의 가야의 역사상을 왜곡할 여지가 있다. 가야와 백제의 우호관계의 근거로 제시된 『일본서기』 신공기를 검토해보면, 금관국이 아닌 탁순이 백제와 왜의 교섭을 중계하였다. 광개토왕비문에는 ‘임나가라’, 즉 금관국만 등장할 뿐 백제 측에서 4세기 후반부터 우호관계가 있었다고 주장된 대가야, 안라, 탁순은 나타나지 않는다. 신공기와 비문을 근거로 가야 제국이 백제, 왜와 연합하고 있었다고 단정하기 어렵다. 따라서 ‘고구려·신라 연합’과 ‘백제·가야·왜 연합’의 대립구도에서 벗어나 4세기 후반 가야 각국의 동향이 검토될 필요가 있다. 또 400년 고구려군의 남정도 백제, 왜와의 관계만이 아니라 고구려, 신라와의 관계에서 면밀히 재검토될 필요가 있을 것이다. 요컨대 가야 제국이 백제, 왜와 연합하여 고구려와 신라에 맞섰다는 기존 견해와는 다른 새로운 관점에서의 국제관계에 대한 이해가 필요한 시점이라고 생각된다.

영문 초록

This article argues that the descriptions of the ninth and tenth years of Yeongrak discussed in the inscription of the Great King Gwanggaeto are responses to the union of Baekje, Gaya, and the Japanese Wae. Due to the confrontation between Goguryeo and Baekje in the late 4th century, the Gaya countries came to be at odds with Goguryeo and Silla as a result of the empire’s friendly relations with Baekje and Wae. However, perceptions of the Gaya Countries can be warped because they were understood to be a unified whole as a result of some of their activities. The Gaya Countries were not a single political body and it is uncertain whether it ever acted in a unified way at the time. Each Gaya countries engaged in foreign relations in different ways in the late 4th century and had different interests with regard to Baekje and Wae. Gaya researchers view the behaviors of the Gaya countries during Goguryeo’s southward conquest in 400 and identify the areas affected by the war differently. Therefore, analyzing Goguryeo’s southward conquest in 400 only in relation to Baekje and Japan would produce a distorted perspective of the Gaya countries at the time. According to the chapter reviewing the Jin’gu-ki in Nihonshoki, Takujunnokuni, not Geumgwan, which was closely related to Wae, reported on the negotiations between Baekje and Wae. The inscription of Great King Gwanggaeto shows only Imnagara, or Geumgwan, but Daegaya, Anra, or Taksun, with which Baekje had had friendly relations since the late 4th century, were not mentioned. Based on the Jin’gu-ki and the inscription, it is difficult to conclude that the Gaya countries were allied with Baekje and Wae. Therefore, it is necessary to stop viewing this period in terms of the Goguryeo-Silla alliance and the Baekje-Gaya-Wae alliance and instead examine the actions of each Gaya country individually. In addition, Goguryeo’s southward conquest in 400 should be closely reviewed in relation to Baekje, Wae, Goguryeo, and Silla. It is time to understand international relations during this period from a new perspective and reject the prevailing idea that the Gaya Countries were allied with Baekje and Wae against Goguryeo and Silla.
