국문 초록

오늘의 한국사회에서 나타나는 여러 갈등과 문제점들 그리고 한국 교회의 대사회적 신뢰성 하락과 사회와의 소통 부재 그리고 공적 기능의 상실 등과 같은 문제점들을 해결해 나가기 위한 하나의 대안으로서 교회의 민주시민교육은 교회자신 뿐만 아니라 한국사회를 위한 매우 중요한 기독교 교육적 과제이다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 연구는 먼저 일반교육에서 사용되는 민주시민교육의 의미를 살펴보고 또한 제자직과 시민직이라는 관점에서 교회의 민주시민교육을 정의한다. 다음으로 종교교육 운동의 대표적 인물인 조지 앨버트 코우의 종교교육 사회론을 비판적으로 고찰한 후에 오늘의 한국교회의 민주시민교육에 주는 함의와 한계점들을 제시하였다. 하나님의 민주주의를 목적으로 하는 코우의 종교교육 사회론에서는 사회와의 관계성이 강조되는 반면 기독교적 정체성이 결여될 가능성이 높다고 할 수 있다. 이에 대한 대안으로 본 연구에서는 기독교의 정체성과 관계성 양자를 균형 있게 강조하는 공공신학을 교회의 민주시민교육의 틀로 제시하였다. 그리하여 세계화시대에 존재하는 교회의 민주시민교육의 목적을 교회의 구성원인 그리스도인 개개인들이 삼위일체론적인 후 인습적 자아정체성과 공적 신앙을 소유하고, 성례전적 평등과 연대성의 공교회를 형성해 나가며, 계약 공동체에 근거한 상호성과 보편성을 추구하는 의사소통적 시민사회의 형성과 변혁을 위한 담론과 실천에 참여 할 수 있는 기독교적 확신을 지닌 제자－시민을 양육해 나가는 것으로 보았다. 이러한 목적에 기초하여 교육과정의 내용과 이에 따른 방법론을 개인적, 교회 공동체적, 교회 공동체 외부적 (또는 시민사회) 차원으로 나누어서 제시하였다.

영문 초록

In responding to the various social and political conflicts and challenges in contemporary Korean society and to the Korean church’s gradual loss of public role and trust from society, this study seeks to develop a model of democratic citizenship education of the church from the perspective of public theology, focusing on public faith and public church. For this purpose, this study first defines the meaning of democratic citizenship education in general and democratic citizenship education of the church in relationship to both discipleship and citizenship. George Albert Coe’s social theory of religious education, especially focusing on the concept of “the democracy of God” is, then, critically explored as one crucial source of democratic citizenship education of the current Korean church. Public theology is employed as a crucial alternative to Coe’s social theory of religious education that shows a lack of Christian identity, is too idealistic and has too naïve an attitude for transforming human beings and society. From this conversation, a model of democratic citizenship education of the current Korean church is posed under the following three aims: 1) formation of a trinitarian-postconventional self identity and public faith (personal dimension), 2) formation of the public church based on sacramental equality and solidarity (ecclesial dimension), and 3) formation of democratic (global) civil society based on the covenantal community of reciprocity and universality (social and global dimension). Curricular contents consisting of the three sub areas and several methods of the model will follow these aims.
