민주사회에서의 중등학교 종교교육의 문제와 방향 고찰

국문 초록

오늘날 우리 사회는 다원주의적 자유민주주의 사회라는 특징을 가진다. 민주사회의 학교교육에서 특정 공동체의 가치인 종교교육은 어떻게 이루어져야 하는가? 본 논문은 민주사회에서의 중등학교 종교교육이 어떻게 이루어져야 하는가를 탐색하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 제 Ⅱ장에서는 학교에서의 종교교육과 관련된 여러 이슈들에 대한 법적, 제도적 문제를 살펴본다. 표면적 갈등 밑에 깔려 있는 근본적인 법적 문제를 검토하며, 그것이 법리적 검토 없이 시행된 중등학교 평준화정책에서 기인됨을 지적한다. 그리고 이에 대한 어떤 해결책이 있는지를 살펴본다. 제 Ⅲ장에서는 학교에서의 종교교육 문제를 철학적, 교육학적 관점에서 살펴본다. 우리나라 종립학교는 종교교육의 내용면에서 시민직과 제자직의 이중언어 교육을 해야 하며, 대상 면에서 신자와 비신자라는 이중적 대상을 가르쳐야 하는 특수성을 가짐을 지적한다. 민주사회에서 분파적 가치를 가르치는 일이 어떻게 정당화되며 왜 필요한지, 순전히 공적원리 중심의 시민교육이 어떤 문제점을 가지는지 등을 철학적, 교육학적으로 설명한다. 끝으로 이를 바탕으로 중등학교, 특히 기독교종립학교에서의 종교교육의 과제와 방향을 제시한다.

영문 초록

Our modern society is characterized by pluralistic liberal democracy. In a liberal democratic society a special religious education in schools could cause a problem of religious freedom to non-believers. The purpose of this paper consists in exploring some ways in which religious education in secondary schools could be practiced. In chapter Ⅱ, I dealt with some issues of religious education from the legal and institutional perspective. We can observe some conflicts among different parties arguing for freedom of religion in school settings. I pointed out that the explicit conflicts fundamentally stem from the high school equalization policy by the Korean government. Thus, I discussed what are the fundamental problems and possible solutions. In chapter Ⅲ, I dealt with the problems of religious education from the philosophical and pedagogical perspective. In liberal society civic education which teaches procedural principles for public domain is emphasized. Thus we need to ask whether religious education which teaches sectarian comprehensive values can be justified in a liberal society. I explained the problems of teaching mainly public values, and I also showed the importance of teaching sectarian comprehensive values from the philosophical and pedagogical perspective. Finally, I emphasized the importance of bi-lingual education both in civic education and in religious education. And I suggested some tasks and direction for religious education in schools.
