국문 초록

확장이 단순한 회원국 수 증가의 의미를 넘어서서 유럽통합을 이끌어온 추진력의 한 축이라는 관점에서 출발한다. 그 해명을 위해 이 글에서는 유럽공동체 확장과 관련된 복합적이고 다층적인 문제들과 그 의미들을 분석하고조명하려는 시도를 하게 될 것이다. 이 논문의 구성은 다음과 같다. 우선 연구영역의 한 분야로서 확장이 유럽통합사에서 가지는 의미를 구체적으로 살피고 확장의 역사에 대한 기존의연구의 경향 및 논쟁점들을 다루게 될 것이다. 두 번째로 살펴볼 주제는 확장과 관련된 기술적인 부분, 즉 확장의 법적 기준과 확장이 성사되는 절차문제이다. 세 번째로는 확장의 단계들을 비교사적인 관점에서 개괄적으로 고찰하면서 각 단계별 확장에 대한 중요한 특징들과 큰 흐름들을 설명할 것이다. 마지막으로 유럽통합사에서 확장과정이 가지는 의미의 한 차원으로서유럽정체성 구성과 확장의 연관성에 관한 시론적인 성격의 질문을 던지게될 것이다.

영문 초록

The theme of this paper is the enlargement of EU. The starting point of thequestion is the assumption that enlargement is not merely an incremental process inwhich new member states attach themselves to the EU membership, but also animportant driving Force of European Integration. This paper aims to explain thisthesis, namely to analyse and illuminate the complex problems and meanings of theenlargement of EU. This paper have a following structure. At first, the meaning of enlargement in theprocess of European Integration is explained and the historiography of theenlargement research is illuminated. Secondly, the technical points and legal groundsof the enlargement is analysed. Thirdly, the comparative aspects of each enlargementrounds will be explained. Finally, as the conclusion the question about the connectionbetween the enlargement and the construction of european identity will be examined.
