This study was aimed at reinterpreting the aspects and meanings of laughter in Japanese Monogatari literature by using various western discourse on laughter. Bergson identified the nature of laughter as mockery and defined the function of laughter as edifying, and many female figures in 『Genji Monogatari』 fear to become the target of “Hitowarae”. This idea serves as a function of pre-censorship, which controls one’s behavior in advance before being ridiculed or laughed at, further extends into a sense of guilt, acting as a shackle to suppress oneself again. Those who were conscious of “Hitowarae” were able to gain recognition as social beings and maintain their lives, but others who were oblivious to it and deviated from the norm were punished with laughter by members of society. 『Ochikubo Monogatari』 may be a work that took full advantage of the function of laughter in this punitive sense. While the laughter depicted in 『Genji Monogatari』 plays the edifying role through bringing the consciousness of “Hitowarae” to characters, the laughter depicted in 『Ochikubo Monogatari』 plays the punitive role through directly ridiculing and laughing at those who commit unfair acts. As can be seen in the above examination, Monogatari works depicted lots of natural laughter arising from being conscious of “superiority over others”, which is one of human being’s most primitive feelings.
