국문 초록

본 연구는 중도 지체장애인의 삶 자체를 통합적으로 이해하고 그의 장애수용과 자립과정을 생애사적 맥락에서 재구성함으로써 장애인들의 잠재력을 재발견하고 다른 중도 장애인들의 자립을 위한 모델을 제시하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 39세 한 중도 지체장애인인 연구 참여자와의 10차례 심층면담, 참여관찰, 연구 보조참여자 4명과의 면담 등을 통하여 자료를 수집하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 연구 참여자인 박대성은 다른 중도 지체장애인들처럼 장애를 수용하는 과정에서 처음에는 충격과 부정, 무기력감으로 인한 우울의 단계를 거쳤다. 그러나 심리적 적응단계가 변천해 가면서 긍정적인 사고로 자신의 한계에서 벗어나 새로운 목표를 가지고 도전하여 자립을 이루었다. 둘째, 연구참여자는 자립 이후 자립지원센터를 운영하고 장애인 권인 운동도 전개하며 자신의 자립뿐만 아니라 다른 중증 장애인들의 자립을 돕는 조력자로서 다시 사는 삶‘을 보여 준 것으로 나타났다. 본 사례를 통해 장애수용과 자립과정에 영향을 준 요인 등에 대해서 논의하였다.

영문 초록

The aims of this study are to understand the life of a person with acquired physical disability synthetically, to rediscover disabled people s potentials and to present a role model for other physically disabled people. For these purposes, data were collected by ten times in-depth interviews with a thirty-nine years old man with acquired physical disability, participant observations, and face-to-face interviews with four assistant participants. Two main results were drawn through the analyses. First, like other people with disabilities, this participant also underwent the stages of depression due to shock, denial, and torpor. Going through adaptation stages, he has succeeded in standing on his own feet, admitting his disabilities positively and challenging himself with new goals beyond his limitations. Second, operating a center for self-reliance and campaigning for disability rights, the participant showed a reborn life as a mentor supporting severely handicapped people s independence as well as his. Based on this case, factors were discussed which influenced disabilities acceptance and Independent Living Process.
