국문 초록

문학과 종교는 본질과 출발에 있어서 생래적 친근성을 가지고 있기에 성서를 포함하여 많은 종교 문헌들은 말할 것도 없고, 고대 신화나 설화, 그리고 고전 문학(Classics)에서는 문학과 종교 사이에 연대와 조화가 두드러진다. 그러나 근대 사회로 진입하면서 인식의 변화가 나타나고, 산업 혁명으로 인해 인구의 도시 집중화가 가속화하여 많은 사회 변동이 일어나게 된다. 이런 변화로 인해 인간의 주된 관심에도 심리적 변화가 일어나게 되고, 문학은 점차 종교와의 친근 관계에서 길항 관계로 바뀌게 된다. 이런 문학사적 성찰은 이제 4차 산업 혁명으로 일컬어지는 인공지능(AI) 시대를 살아가고 있는 우리로 하여금 다시 한번 문학과 종교의 본질적 관계에 대해 성찰하도록 요구하고 있다. 본 소고는 이러한 문제의식을 가지고 먼저 문학과 종교의 관계 패턴인 친근 관계와 길항 관계에 대해 살펴본다. 이어 사다리의 발판처럼 둘 사이를 연결하는 접점들(nexuses)에 대해 문학과 종교의 친근성을 강조하는 입장에서 고찰한다. 본 소고에서 제시하는 문학과 종교의 접점들로는 체험과 표현, 직관과 여성적인 것, 이탈과 일탈, 필연성과 우연성, 신의 섭리와 인간의 우연성이다.

영문 초록

Literature and religion have an inherent familiarity with nature and origin, and many religious texts including the Bible and classical literatures show solidarity and harmony between literature and religion. However, in the modern society, a change of perception occurred and the industrial revolution accelerated the urban concentration of the population which resulted in many social changes. This change also caused psychological changes in various human interests, and literature gradually changed from a familiar relationship with religion to a competitive relationship. This reflection on literary history requires us, now living in the AI era, a Fourth Industrial Revolution, to reflect once again on the essential relationship between literature and religion. With this problem in mind, this paper first looks at the patterns of relationships between literature and religion: familiarity and antagonism. It then considers the nexuses that connect the two in an emphasis on the familiarity of literature and religion. The nexuses between literature and religion presented in this essay are experience and expression, intuition and femininity, secession and deviation, inevitability and coincidence, divine providence and human coincidence.
