‘대상화’의 의미와 여성신학적 관점에서의 비판

국문 초록

이 논문은 대상화에 대한 의미를 정의 내리고, 사상적인 측면과 역사적인 측면에서 여성들이 어떠한 방식으로 대상화되어 왔는지를 분석하고 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 나아가 이러한 탐구를 통해 대상화의 원인을 진단해 보고, 이를 해결하기 위해 어떤 대안적 관점과 방법이 필요한지를 제안하는 것으로 마무리된다. 대상화의 근본적인 원인은 주체의 과장된 권리를 진리인 양 믿게 만드는 데서 비롯된다. 이것은 인식론적으로 주체 중심적인 주객 관계에서 시작하며, 주체의 주체 중심적 월권은 대상에게 역사의 부재와 사회를 총체적 관점으로 묶어버리는 왜곡된 결과를 안겨준다. 오랜 역사 동안 여성은 대상화의 주요 대상이어왔기 때문에 대상화의 의미와 원인 분석은 여성에 대한 새로운 관계성을 정립할 수 있는 중요한 시작점이 될 수 있다. 특별히 기독교 전통이 풍부하게 드러내 주고 있는 여성 대상화를 시대별로 탐구하는 것은 성서 속의 여성들, 기독교 전통 역사 속에서 주어진 본분과 이미지대로 살았던 여성들, 오늘날의 교회가 제한적으로 부여한 직분으로 살아가고 있는 여성들이 남성 중심적인 기독교 전통 속에서 여성 대상화라는 형상으로 계승되고 있다는 것을 다시 한번 상기시켜 줄 것이다. 여성들의 삶과 역사가 단지 그렇게 말하고 기록되어 있다는 이유로 사실이고 진리라고 말할 수 없다. 그것은 대상화의, 대상화하기 위해 수행된 해석을 통해, 그리고 총체적 사회성이라는 폐쇄된 공간이 이룩해 놓은 생산물일 뿐이다. 이러한 차원에서 여성 대상화의 원인은 주체 중심적인 주객 관계, 역사의 부재, 그리고 사회적 총체성으로 정리할 수 있다. 이들은 각각, 상호 주관적인 사회적 관계, 평등한 관점을 기반으로 한 해석의 다양성, 그리고 아래로부터의 유동적인 공동체 정신을 통해 극복될 수 있다.

영문 초록

This article aims to define what ‘objectification’ is, and to explore how women have been objectified in ideological and social ways. Furthermore, it tries to find out the cause of objectification, and concludes by suggesting what alternative insights and methods are needed. The primary cause of objectification is the result of the subject exaggerating that their own right is truth. Its origins come from the subject-centered relationship between subject and object. The subject-centered arrogation of the subject brings about the absence of object’s own history and the rigidity of society. Historically women have been ‘the typical object’ of objectification, so the meaning of objectification and the analysis of its causes thus can be an important starting point that can establish the new relationship with women. Particularly I pay attention to the objectification of women which is on display in the Christian tradition. This reminds us that the women in the Bible, the women who lived with duties and images given in the history of Christian tradition, and the women who act in traditional roles permitted by today’s church are all suffer from objectification in the androcentric Christian tradition. If the lives and history of all these women are fact and truth just because they were said and recorded, it is nonsense. It is merely the outcome of objectification, of the filtered interpretation of their lives. From this perspective, the causes of objectification can be classified in three ways, the subject-centered relationship, the absence of history, and the social totality. Each of them can be overcome through the intersubjective social relationship, the diversity of interpretation in equality, and the flexible community from below.
