국문 초록

본 연구는 1980년대 기독인들이 억압적 권력에 저항하면서 자발적으로 만들어갔던 공론장, 특히 ‘고난받는 자들을 위한 목요 예배’와 ‘현대인을 위한 교양 강좌회’를 중심으로 기독교 공공성의 특성을 살펴보았다. 공적인 것과 사적인 것의 경계를 넘어서는 초월성, 시민 사회의 이익을 향하는 보편성, 개인의 구체적인 삶을 근거로 한 현장성, 공통으로 합의되어 형성된 담론이 실천으로 행해지는 실천성, 누구나 접근 가능하고 자유로운 토의 과정을 통해 의사 결정 과정의 민주성을 확보하는 개방성의 가치들이다. 시대를 넘어서는 다섯 측면의 공통적 가치들은 기독교 공공성을 논하는 데 유의미한 기준이 될 것이다. 대항적 공론장으로서 목요 예배는 ‘공공성의 타자’, ‘의사소통의 타자’로서 담론의 공론장을 형성하기 어려운 조건 하에 있는 사람들이 자기의 목소리를 내도록 듣는 타자를 자처하였다. 거대 권력 앞에 버림받은 상황이 되어버린 사람들에게 가장 먼저 듣는 타자가 되어줄 뿐 아니라, 말하는 주체와 함께 행동하며, 그들의 보호막이 되어주는 일은 기독교 공공성이 갖고 있는 최우선적 과제이자 특징이다. 교육 공론장으로서 교양 강좌회는 당시 중요한 시대적인 담론들을 기독교의 공공성으로 연결하는 장이었고, 또 민주 시민 교육의 장이기도 하였다. 공론장의 해체를 종용하는 권력에 저항하기 위한 강한 결속을 다지는 장이었으며, 수평성의 원리 안에 다양한 담론이 논의되는 개방적인 공론장을 형성하였다.

영문 초록

The present study examines the characteristics of Christianity’s publicness, focusing on ‘Thursday Worship for Suffering People’ and ‘Liberal Arts Meetings for Modern People’ in the public sphere, which Christians voluntarily developed in resistance to the oppressive power back in the 1980s. Specifically, the following values are discussed in this study: transcendence to exceed the boundary between public and private spheres; universality to pursue benefits of the civil society; areas to consider an individual’s specific life as important; practicality to realize a discourse commonly agreed upon; and openness to secure democracy of decision-making through a free discussion process that is open to anyone. These five common values transcend the ages and are significant criteria for discussing Christianity’s publicness. Furthermore, as a counter-public sphere, Thursday Worship claimed to be the listening other, that is, ‘the other of publicness’ and ‘the other of communication,’ which lets people who found it difficult to find a voice in public sphere of discourse to be heard. Not only becoming the listening other who pays attention to people abandoned by an enormous power but also protecting them by acting in favor of the speaking subject, this is one of the top-priority missions of Christianity in terms of publicness. In the public sphere of education, Liberal Arts Meetings were a field of education for democratic citizens and an open field that connected vital discourses of the times to Christianity’s publicness. In the face of forces seeking to break up the public sphere, Liberal Arts Meetings instead formed an open public sphere where various issues were discussed in the principle of horizontality.
