국문 초록

초국가적 이민 교회 속에서 여성 차별을 의미하는 스테인드 유리 천장 아래에서 그간 드러나지 않았던 기독교 여성 리더들의 경험을 가시화하려는 시도가 필요하다. 미국과 캐나다의 북미 지역으로의 초국가적인 이주의 경험과 초국가적인 한국 기독교 속에서 겪는 한인 이민 1세대 여성 리더들(목사, 전도사, 사모 등)의 어려움은 성, 인종, 계급, 신분, 가부장적인 문화와 구조 등으로 인한 교차적 차별성 때문에 더욱 심각한 상황에 있다. 그러나 이들은 많은 제도적, 문화 사회적, 경제적, 신분적인 어려움에도 불구하고 북미에서 기독교 사역을 지속하면서 여성 리더십 역량을 발휘하고 있다. 그리고 초국가적인 한국 기독교 발전에 공헌한 살아있는 역사적 주체들이라 할 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 교회 구조 및 한인들의 정서 속에서 여성 리더들은 남성과 동등하게 인식되고 있지 않다. 필자는 초학제적인 연구 방법의 여성신학적 관점의 구술 생애사 연구를 통해 이제까지 소외되어 있던 그들 자신의 목소리를 들려주고자 한다. 이를 통하여 한국 교회 안에서 안수 및 사역의 기회 등에서 행해진 여성 차별적인 정책들, 기독교 역사에서 문헌 기록이 미비한 부분들을 점검하고 이를 극복할 수 있다고 본다.

영문 초록

This paper attempts to make transnational Korean Christian women leaders’ intersectionality visible and to propose these women as women’s leadership role models. It explores first-generation Korean Christian women leaders — moksa (ordained pastor), jeondo-sa (un-ordained pastor), and samo (pastor’s wife) — who face multiple challenges such as discrimination as members of minority groups based on the intersection of gender, race, class, immigration status, patriarchal culture, and structure of their transnational immigrant churches in North America, including the U.S. and Canada. These women leaders have developed unique leadership capacities that have made them strong enough to survive in their transnational and intersectional contexts. Their marginalized contexts manifest missing women’s agency in church politics and history that have excluded and limited women’s leadership in the written historical records as well as in the ordination process of most Christian denominations. The oral history method employed in transdisciplinary feminist theology facilitates a break in the stained-glass ceiling that hinders women’s full participation in church leadership by revealing hidden layers of the women’s lived experiences.
