Correlates of Spirituality, Death Anxiety and Depression among Community-dwelling Disabled Elderly

국문 초록

본 연구는 재가 장애노인의 영성이 죽음불안과 우울에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고, 영성과 우울과의 관계에서 죽음 불안의 매개효과를 분석하였다. 분석을 위해 D시와 G지역에 거주하는 재가 장애노인 268명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS 20.0을 활용하여 분석하였으며, 죽음 불안의 매개효과에 대한 분석은 Baron과 Kenny(1986)가 제시한 방법을 활용하였다. 분석 결과 장애노인의 영성은 죽음불안과 우울과 부적으로 유의한 관계를 가지는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 높은 수준의 영성을 경험하는 장애노인일수록 자신의 죽음에 대한 불안과 우울 수준을 낮게 경험하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 장애노인의 사회인구학적 특성을 통제하고 분석한 결과 장애노인의 영성과 우울과의 관계에 죽음불안은 통계적으로 유의한 부분 매개 효과를 가지는 것으로 확인되었다. 이러한 연구 결과는 영성과 죽음불안이 장애노인의 우울을 감소시키는 중요한 심리적 자원이 될 수 있음을 보여주며, 우울을 경험하는 지역사회 장애노인을 위한 정신건강 증진을 위한 함의 및 후속연구의 방향을 제시하고 있다.

영문 초록

The goal of this study was to explore the mediating effect of death anxiety on the relationship between spirituality and depression among the disabled elderly. A survey was conducted of 268 community-dwelling disabled elderly. Multiple regression model was used to analyze the associations of spirituality and death anxiety with depression and the mediating effect of death anxiety using Baron and Kenny’s (1986) approach. Results showed that spirituality was inversely associated with depression and death anxiety, and disabled elderly with greater spirituality experienced less depression and death anxiety. Moreover, the relationship between spirituality and depression was partially mediated by death anxiety after controlling for socio-demographic variables. Findings indicated the spirituality and death anxiety could be important resources for alleviating depression of community dwelling disabled elderly. Consequently, interventions for disabled elderly with depression need to be considered their spiritual needs with death anxiety.
