장흥 신북 구석기유적 유물군의 다원성과 동북아시아에서의 관계성

국문 초록

2002년부터 장흥 신북 후기구석기유적에 대한 조사와 연구가 지속되어 왔다. 그 결과 유적의 환경과 입지, 층서와 문화층, 편년, 석기군의 구성 등에 관한 정보가 상당히 축적되었다. 그리고 돌날석기로 대표되는 체계적이고 복합적인 도구제작, 슴베찌르개를 사용한 원거리 사냥, 다양한 밀개가 지시하는 발전된 가죽 가공, 화덕이 딸린 주거생활, 철석영의 상징적 사용 등 아프리카와 유럽의 현생인류 문화와 유사한 요소들이 유물군에서 많이 확인되었다. 한편 백두산과 일본 규슈 기원의 흑요석은 신북유적의 구석기인들이 원거리교류망과 도항 능력의 소유자였음을 가리킨다. 그리고 시베리아 기원의 유베츠형 좀돌날몸돌, 한반도 고유의 슴베찌르개가 공존하는 점에서 그들은 원거리의 이질적인 문화와 교류하면서 지역의 동질성을 유지하는 삶을 꾸려나갔다고 해석된다. 이처럼 신북유적은 동북아시아에서 전개되었던 후기구석기문화의 다원성과 관계성을 복원하는데 있어 소중한 가치를 지닌다.

영문 초록

For the last 20 years, archaeological excavations, surface surveys, and related researches have been carried out, and two international symposium were held on the Sinbuk Upper Paleolithic site. As a result, various archaeological records and informations about site location and its environment, stratigraphy and cultural layer, chronology, lithic assemblage, function of the site and etc. have been accumulated abundantly. Modern human behaviors such as complex and systematic tool production system, hunting technology of long-range projectiles, improved skin-working technology, stone hearth construction, symbolic use of ferruginous quartz are traced based on scientific analysis of artifacts and features from the site. Obsidians originated from the Paektusan and Koshidake indicate that inhabitants of the Sinbuk site had long-distance exchange network and capability of a crossing. And coexistence of the Yubetsu type micro-blade core of Siberian origin and characteristic tanged point of Korean Peninsula implies that they made a living by keeping internal identity and interacting with external different cultures. Thus, the Sinbuk site has significant potential not only to restore various aspects of modern human behaviors but also to investigate the cultural exchange and migration in the Northeast Asia during Upper Paleolithic.
