국문 초록

이 글에서는 崔錫鼎과 柳僖의 저술을 통해서 조선후기 훈민정음 연구의 실제와 그 성과에 대해 살펴보고자 했다. 崔錫鼎의 연구는 그가 저술한 『經世正韻』을 통해서 확인된다. 이 책에서 崔錫鼎은 훈민정음을 이용하여 중국의 漢字音을 표준적으로 표기할 수 있는 방법을 모색했다. 崔錫鼎의 작업은 『東國正韻』 편찬 이래, 여러 방식으로 중국 한자음의 표준을 정하려 했던 노력과 비슷했다. 柳僖는 『諺文志』를 지어, 한글의 알파벳을 확정하고 이를 통하여 일상 속 한글 사용의 규범을 만들려고 했다. 이는 최석정의 목적과는 구별되었다. ‘尊文賤諺’의 현실에 대한 비판, 한글이 ‘부녀’의 문자로만 한정되어서는 아니 된다는 의식에서 저술된 『諺文志』에는 한자와 한글의 위계성을 해체하려는 유희의 지향이 담겨 있었던 것으로 판단된다. 두 학자의 연구는 목표와 성과가 상이했다. 하지만 조선의 역사 전통을 중시하고 국가의 보존에 큰 관심을 기울이던 사고 위에서 연구를 진행하며 한글이 가진 가능성을 확장한 점에서는 공통적이었다.

영문 초록

In this article, I tried to examine the reality and results of the study of Hunmin-jeongeum(訓民正音) in the late Joseon Dynasty through the work of the late Joseon scholar Choi Seok-jeong(崔錫鼎) and Yu Hee(柳僖). The research of Choi Seok-jeong is confirmed through his writings of the Gyeungsejeongun(經世正韻). In this book, Choi Seok-jeong sought a way to standardly mark Chinese characters by using Hunminjeongeum. His work was similar to that of King Sejong s attempt to set the standard for Chinese consonants by compiling Donggukjeongun(東國正韻). By creating Eonmunji(諺文志), Yu Hee tried to establish the alphabet of Hunmin-jeongeum, and through this, He attempted to create a norm for the use of Hangeul in everyday life. This feature was distinguished from Choi Seok-jeong, who was interested in the notation of Chinese consonants. Yu Hee s writings of Eonmunji appear to have been intended to disrupt the hierarchy between Chinese and Korean characters. The research attitudes and achievements of the two scholars were very different from each other, but they both focused on the historical traditions of Joseon and paid much attention to the preservation of the country.
