서양인 선교사들의 한국 여성 인식과 여성론

국문 초록

본 연구는 『코리안 리포지터리』와 『코리아 리뷰』에 실린 여성 관련 기사들을 통해 근대 서양 선교사들의 한국 여성 인식과 논의를 분석했다. 선교사들은 가정과 사회에서 한국 여성들의 지위와 현실에 주목하고 이를 공론화하여 서양인들의 한국 여성에 대한 인식과 이해의 폭을 넓히는 것은 물론 한국인들의 여성 문제 인식에도 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 초기 선교사들을 비롯해 대부분의 서양인들은 단편적인 정보와 관찰을 바탕으로 ‘은둔하고’, ‘억압받는’, ‘불평등한‘ 한국 여성으로 재현했다. 하지만 『코리안 리포지터리』와 『코리아 리뷰』의 여성 관련 논의는 소재와 주제가 다양할 뿐 아니라 논의의 깊이와 인식에서 차이가 있었다. 선교사 존스와 헐버트는 한국 여성을 남녀불평등과 억압 속에서도 가정과 사회에서 능동적이고 적극적으로 자신의 역할을 해 나가는 주체성을 가진 존재로 파악했다. 이처럼 개항 이후 선교사들은 관찰자의 입장에서 가정과 사회에서 한국 여성의 지위나 일상을 기록하는데 그치지 않고 기독교 전도와 여성 교육을 통해 여성 인식과 그들이 처한 현실을 변화시키고자 했다. 여성 문제를 인식한 한국 여성들은 권리와 자유를 획득하고 나아가 사회와 국가의 문명개화, 부국강병을 목적으로 한 여성단체와 여학교를 설립하는 등 적극적으로 여성운동과 사회운동을 펼치기 시작했다. 하지만 선교사들의 한국 여성에 대한 인식과 문제 해결에는 한계가 있었다. 한국 여성의 ‘불우한’ 현실에 공감하고 더 나은 지위와 권리를 획득할 수 있도록 근대적 교육을 실시하면서도 서양 여성이 누리는 자유와 권리와 같은 수준에 이르기는 힘들다고 판단했다. 선교사들이 기독교 전도와 교육을 통해 이끌어내고자 한 여성 변화의 궁극적 목표는 기독교 가정의 ‘안주인’이 되는 것이며, 한국사회를 기독교 사회로 변화시키는 주체가 되는 것이었다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the Western missionaries perception and discussion of Korean women through articles on women published in the Korean Repository and Korea Review in modern period. The missionaries paid attention to the status and reality of Korean women in the family and society and made public discussions, broadening the perception and understanding of Korean women by Westerners, as well as having a great influence on Koreans perception of women s issues. Most Westerners, including early missionaries, represented as “secluded,” “repressed,” and “unequal” Korean women based on fragmentary information and observations. However, discourses related to women in the Korean Repository and the Korea Review not only were various in material and subject, but also differed in depth and perception. Missionaries Jones and Hulbert identified Korean women as beings with the identity of playing a role actively and enthusiastically in the family and society despite gender inequality and oppression. Since the opening of the port, missionaries had not only recorded the status and daily life of Korean women in the home and society from the viewpoint of observers, but had also tried to change women s perception and the reality they face through Christian evangelism and women s education like this. Recognizing the women s problem, Korean women actively engaged in women s movements and social movements, such as establishing women s organizations and girls schools for the purpose of acquiring rights and freedoms and enlightening society and the state and powering up a wealthy country further. However, there were limitations in the missionaries perception of Korean women and solving problems. They judged that it would be difficult to achieve the same level of freedom and rights that Western women enjoy while sympathizing with the “unfavorable” reality of Korean women and providing modern education so that Korean women could acquire better status and rights. The ultimate goal of women s transformation, which missionaries sought to lead through Christian evangelism and education, was to become a “hostess” of a Christian family, and to become a subject that transforms Korean society into a Christian society.
