시간의 지속과 순간 개념을 중심으로 한 사진 분석

국문 초록

이미지의 시대라고 불리는 현대사회에서 우리는 사진, 영상 등의 다양한 이미지를 접하고 살아간다. 초기 사진 이론들에서는 이미지의 일방적인 전달로 인해 그 수용자가 많은 영향을 받고 있음을 지적 하고 있으나, 현대의 이론들은 이제 이미지는 단순히 일방적인 발신이 아니라 수용자에 의해 해석되어 그 의미가 전달되는 것이라고 주장하고 있다. 인간이 하나의 이미지를 인식하고 그것을 해석하기 위해서는 자신의 경험 등, 기억들을 이용하게 된다. 본고에서는 이미지의 시대 사진의 해석을 수용자에게 초점을 맞추어 그 해석의 과정을 하나의 ‘지속’과 같은 개념으로 보고 사진 해석을 이해하고자 한다. 본문에서는 사진의 철학, 사진 이미지의 해석이 시대에 따라 어떻게 달라졌는지를 살펴보고, 현대 사진의 해석에는 작가와 함께 그것을 보는 수용자(관객)의 역할 또한 확대되었음을 설명하였다. 그리고 사진을 대표하는 ‘순간’ 이라는 단어에 대한 개념의 정립을 위해 사진작가 앙리 카르티에 브레송의 작품과 그 해석에 대해 설명하였다. 앙리 카르티에 브레송의 작품은 ‘결정적 순간’이라는 말로 대표될 만큼 사진에서의 ‘순간’을 강조하고 있다. 그러나 그의 결정적 순간이란 셔터를 누르는 물리적 시간의 순간이 아니라 사진을 찍는 그 시간에 작가의 머릿속에서 작품을 만들어내는 모든 사진의 기술적 고려가 연장된 하나의 지속 안에서 존재하는 순간과 같은 개념인 것을 작가의 말과 그의 작품을 해석하고 있는 다른 이론을 빌려 설명하고자 하였다. 이어서 사진을 이해핸 새로운 키워드로서 ‘지속’을 제안한다. 베르그송의 ‘지속’ 개념을 빌려 ‘지속’에 대해 이해한 뒤, 그 지속의 개념이 좀 더 잘 드러난 사진가 김아타의 작품을 예로 들어 사진을 찍는 작가의 과정 뿐 아니라 그 이미지의 해석 또한 ‘지속’의 개념으로 설명할 수 있음을 이야기하고자 하였다. 우리는 누구나 카메라를 가지고 사진을 찍으며 그 이미지를 컴퓨터를 통해 인터넷에서 다른 사람들과 공유하는 시대, 사진이 일상이 되어버린 시대에 살고 있다. 이 시대 사진 이미지는 사람들의 일상의 연장, 일상의 지속과 다르지 않다. 기존의 사진 해설에 얽매여 사진을 이해하고자 하는 것보다 수용자 자신의 해석과정(지속)을 통해 사진 이미지를 이해하고자 하는 해석의 유연성이야 말로 다양한 이미지의 시대에 필요한 자세라 생각한다.

영문 초록

Contemporary society in the age of images exposes us to a variety of images in the forms of pictures and video clips. Early theories of photography point out that the unidirectional conveyance of images influences the audience. Contemporary theories of photography, in contrast, claims that the significance of an image is delivered through the interpretation of its perceiver instead of the one-way representation of its sender. When one perceives and interprets an image, he refers to his own experiences and memories associated with it. 1bis study focuses on receivers in terms of the hermeneutic process of photography in this era, regarding the hermeneutic process as a kind of duration. I investigate how the philosophy of photography, the interpretation of photographic images, has been changed in the course of history, and describe that the role of a receiver or audience is now more emphasized than the past. The study delves into the works of Henri Cartier Bresson and their critical interpretations in order to clarify the notion of a moment representing a picture as a whole; his works illustrate a photographic moment , which was even termed by their own creator as the decisive moment . However, the decisive moment does not mean the physically articulated time of pressing the button; it is rather an instant existing in the duration embracing the possible techniques a photographer can conceive of at the moment of envisioning a work in his mind. The photographer s own remarks on his works and the theories borrowed to interpret them are referred to in this research. In this regard, I suggest the Duration as a new key concept contributing to a novel understanding of photography. First, I refer to the notion of the Duration of Hemi-Louis Bergson. Then, I analyze the works of the photographer, Atta Kim, proving that the interpretation of an image as well as the process of taking a picture can also be viewed in terms of duration. We live in the age when anybody can take pictures with a camera and share them with others on the internet, or the age when pictures are a great part of our daily lives. A photographic image is no less than an protruded extension or duration of everyday life. I suggest that a flexible attitude of reading images based on the interpretive process or duration, not on the conventional interpretations, is something required in the age of diverse images.
