국문 초록

이 연구는 1980년대 임철우 초기 소설을 중심으로 작가의식과 소설적 상상력의 대응양상을 이 시기 그의 소설에 나타난 독특한 이중구조와 함께 분석한 것이다. 1980년대의 한국문학은 광주 민중 항쟁을 시발점으로 폭력적 현실과 마주한 민주화에의 요구로 문학의 정치성이 강하게 표출되었던 시기이다. 특히 5·18과 관련된 문학적 상상력은 항쟁 사실을 전달하기 위한 텍스트의 생산과 아울러 그 전달의 ‘방법’ 에 있어서도 다각적인 전략을 요구했다. 임철우는 당대의 역사적 전환점에서 오월과관련된 소설을 본격적으로 다루며 광주의 체험과 6·25라는 동족상잔의 문제에 천착했다. 그는 여러 지면을 통해 작가 자신이 광주 항쟁 이후 오랫동안 만성적 죄의식에시달려왔으며 그것이 작가적 외상으로 남았다고 술회해 왔다. 본고는 임철우의 초기작에 나타난 소설의 구조가 갈등과 화해의 두 요소를 기반으로 하나의 결말로 종결되는 이중구조로 구성되어 있다는 점에 주목하였다. 그의 초기소설을 관통하는 역사와 문학적 현실의 대비는 직간접적인 이중구조의 변용을 통해나타나는데, 그 스펙트럼이 매우 다양하고 이질적이면서 한편으로는 그 기저에 일관된 작가의식이 관류하고 있다는 점에서 임철우 소설의 특징적인 일면을 고구할 수 있다고 판단된다. 임철우 초기소설은 광주항쟁이 낳은 부끄러움과 죄책감을 알레고리양식으로 우회하거나 매우 정치한 리얼리즘 기법을 통해 직접적으로 다루는 방식을보여주는데, 독특한 것은 리얼리즘과 함께 전경화되는 서정성으로 인해 그의 초기작을 어떤 하나의 경향으로 해석해 내기에는 일정한 난점이 뒤따른다. 이는 창작과 관련된 검열 등 당시의 시대적 상황에 기인한 점이 없지 않겠으나 보다 근본적으로는작가 내면의 죄의식을 드러내는 문학적 서사장치로 이중구조가 채택되었다고 볼 수있다. 본고에서는 임철우 초기소설에 나타난 이중구조의 양상이 어두운 시대적 배경에맞서는 대응과 자기문학세계의 구축과 불가분의 관계에 있으며, 이러한 이중구조의변용이 다양한 형식실험으로 일정한 방향의 변모와 지향성을 보여주었다는 점을 재조명하고 있다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the confrontation between Im Cheol-woo’s conscience and his novelistic imagination alongside the unique dual structure that appears in his novels written around the 1980s, focusing on his early novels from then. As for the Korean literature of the 1980s, the time when the political motivation of literature was intensively expressed due to the demand for democratization against the violent reality starting from the Gwangju Democratization Movement. Particularly, the literary imagination related to the May 18 movement required the production of text to convey the truth of the movement as well as diversified strategies regarding the “method” of conveying the text. Im inquired into the experience of the movement and the issue of the fratricidal war (the Korean War) by writing novels about the May 18 movement at the historical turning point of the time. He recalled many times through a number of papers that he had suffered from a chronic guilty conscience after the May 18 movement, which he said had turned into trauma. This study focused on the dual structure of his early works, where two elements, namely conflict and reconciliation, converge into a single ending. The contrast between the history and literary reality that penetrates his early works appears through the direct and indirect transformation of the dual structure and seems to reveal a unique side of Im’s novels in that its spectrum is diverse and heterogeneous, and yet a consistent writer’s conscience runs through in its foundation. Im’s early novels bypassed the shame and guilty conscience that came alongside the May 18 movement in the form of an allegory or dealt with them directly through political realism. Interestingly, there is a certain difficulty in interpreting his early works into a single trend due to the lyricism that is brought to the foreground by realism. This is partly attributed to the circumstances of the time, such as censorship related to creative activities. However, more fundamentally, the dual structure was adopted as a literary narrative mechanism that reveals the guilty conscience inside the writer. This study re-illuminated the point that the mode of dual structure that appears in Im’s early works has an inseparable relationship with the response against the dark historical backdrop and the development of his own literary world and that the transformation of this dual structure showed changes with a consistent aim and a sense of direction through the exploration of various formats.
