국문 초록

기독교가 당대의 종교에서 시대의 정치사상으로 자리매김하기까지 아우구스티누스의 역할과 공헌은 절대적이다. 아우구스티누스는 플라톤의 이데아론을 적용하여, 하나님의 나라를 설명하고 가시화시킨다. 고대 그리스의 소크라테스와 플라톤의 정치사상이 아우구스티누스를 통해서 다시 살아나, 기독교는 명실 공히 세계종교이자 세계의 정치사상으로 자리 잡아 가게 된 것이다. 이 글에서는 아우구스티누스의 사상을 중심으로, 기독교의 정치사상적 요소에 초점을 맞춘다. 이를 위해 II장에서는 아우구스티누스의 저작 『하나님의 도성』을 통해 두 도성 이야기의 논리를 분석하고, III장에서 기독교적 덕성과 현실의 정치질서의 관계설정에 대한 논의를 통해 법과 정부 형성의 연원에 대해 알아본다. IV장에서는 세상의 질서잡기를 통한 평화의 달성이라는 정치의 궁극적 목적과 그에 대한 기독교의 역할에 대해 분석한다. 이어서 로마제국 말기에 혼란한 제국의 현실에서 기독교 사상이 어떻게 질서잡기와 평화정착에 성공하면서 이후 중세 1000년의 지배적 정치사상으로 자리 잡게 되었는지에 대해서도 알아볼 것이다. 아우구스티누스가 5세기에 제시한 기독교와 정치질서의 형성, 그리고 평화에 대한 접근법은 현대사회에서도 여전히 유효하다. 정치질서의 근간에 정의와 공동선이 배치되고, 이에 대한 제대로 된 인지를 통해 올바른 법과 제도가 정립된다. 당연한 귀결로 국가에는 기강과 질서가 자리 잡게 되고, 궁극적으로 평화로 이어진다는 구도로서, 이러한 논리는 21세기의 국가론이나 국제정치론에서도 여전히 강력하게 작동하는 현실적 함의를 지니고 있다.

영문 초록

Augustine contributes to establish Christianity as a political thought for the Roman period and Middle Ages, not just as a religion. He views and explains the City of God, with a theory of the Idea of Plato. With the work of Augustine using political thought of Socrates and Plato in the Ancient Greece, Christianity has been recognized not only as a religion of the world, but also as s political thought of the world. In this study, I will focus on the political thought of Christianity in Augustine. In chapter II, I will analyze the story of Two Cities through Augustine s City of God. Chapter III will try to search the origin for law and government via the analysis of the relationship between Christian virtue and political order in the Real-Politik. In the next chapter, I try to explain the establishment of peace via order in the world as the ultimate goal of the politics, and the role of Christianity for it. I will also try to view how Christianity has been settled down as a dominant political thought for the Middle Ages since the fall of Roman Empire. Christianity, constituting political order and setting peace that Augustine presented in the 5th century is still valid in our contemporary society. According to Augustine, justice and common good is located in the base of political order, with which just law and institutions will be existed. It will be led to the well-ordered society followed by the state of the ultimate peace. In real politik, his discourse strongly works in the field of state theory and international relations.
