일본 고전문학 속의 노인 혐오

국문 초록

본 논문에서는 일본 고전 문학에서 노인을 어떻게 묘사하고 있는지 분석하여 현대 일본의 노인 이미지의 원류를 밝히려 했다. 일본 고전문학에는 버려지는 노인을 다룬 기로설화가 다수 존재한다. 대표적인 오바스테(姨捨) 설화는 산속에 버려진 노녀에 대한 이야기이다. 『곤자쿠 모노가타리슈(今昔物語集)』 등에 전해지는 이야기 속에서 노녀는 노화에 따른 신체의 변화를 이유로 버려지게 된다. 기로는 보통 경제적인 원인이 거론되지만, 노화에 따른 신체변화에 대한 두려움과 기피는 가족(가정)내에서 노인을 고립시켰고, 이것이 기로의 한 원인이었다고 생각된다. 이는 이후 노녀가 인적이 드문 산 속에 사는 야마우바(山姥)라는 요괴 이미지로 정착되는 계기가 되었다. 나아가 야마우바는 이후 남성 중심의 가부장 사회에서 자녀나 배우자에게 부양받지 못하는 노녀와 연결되게 된다. 이하라 사이카쿠(井原西鶴)의 『사이카쿠 쇼코쿠바나시(西鶴諸国ばなし)』에는 재색을 겸비한 미녀가 홀로 노인이 되어 결국 야마우바가 되는 이야기가 실려있다. 가난하고 외모가 쇠퇴한 노인은 사회적으로 고립되고 배척되어 요괴라는 혐오의 대상이 되어 버린 것이다. 혐오 대상은 두렵거나 조롱의 대상이 되기도 한다. 노인은 에도시대(江戸時代)에 바달한 소화(笑話)에서는 가난으로 인해 재물에 집착하는 모습, 주변사람들의 기피로 인해 사랑하는 모습이 희화화 되어 묘사되고 있다. 재물과 사랑을 추구하는 인간적인 욕구조차 혐오의 대상인 노인에게는 허락되지 않는 것이다.

영문 초록

In this paper, I tried to shed light on the original images of the elderly in modern Japan by analyzing how they describe the elderly in Japanese classical literature. In Japanese classical literature, there are many old stories about abandoned elderly people or senicide. A typical story is about an old woman abandoned in the mountains􋹲Obaste. In the stories told in “Konzakumonogatarishyu”, the old woman is abandoned due to changes in her body due to aging. Senicide is usually cited for economic causes, but fear and avoidance of physical changes caused by aging are also thought to have been one of the causes of senicide. This may have led to the settlement of the old woman with the bizarre image of Yamauva, who lives in a mountain where people are rare. Furthermore, Yamauva will be linked to elderly women who are not supported by their children or spouses in a male􋹲dominated patriarchal society. “Saikaku Shokobanashi” in Saikaku, Ihara, tells the story of a beautiful woman with both beauty becoming an old man alone and eventually becoming Yamauva. An old man who was poor and in decline in appearance was described as a monster and became a object of hatred. An object of hatred can be a thing of fear or ridicule. The old man is depicted as a comic strip in the digestive system, which is desperate for the Edo period, obsessed with wealth due to poverty, and loved by people around him due to the avoidance of others. Even the human desire to pursue wealth and love is not allowed to the elderly, who are subject to hatred.
