박완서 노년소설에 나타난 노년의 의미

국문 초록

본고는 박완서의 ｢저물녘의 황홀｣과 ｢여덟 개의 모자로 남은 당신｣을 중심으로 노년인물이 지나온 삶을 회상하면서 자신의 정체성을 재정립하는 과정을 리쾨르의 이야기 정체성을 통해 살펴보았다. ｢저물녘의 황홀｣에서 노년여성은 육체의 쇠락으로 인한 혐오와 죽음에 대한 공포로 정체성이 분열된다. 하지만 유년 시절, 중풍으로 쓰러진 할아버지를 병구완하던 화초할머니의 자기성과 화초할머니와 친할머니의 우정에 기초한 배려를 회상하면서 늙은 육체를 기꺼이 수용한다. ｢여덟 개의 모자로 남은 당신｣에서 서술자는 죽음 앞에서 의연히 스스로 세운 약속을 이행하는 남편의 자기성을 통해 삶과 죽음에 대해 성찰한다. 또한 남편을 돌보면서 유한성이라는 인간 존재의 취약함을 깨닫고, 남은 삶을 타자와 더불어 사랑하면서 살아가고자 하는 미래에 대한 전망과 함께 정체성을 재정립한다. 요컨대 ｢저물녘의 황홀｣과 ｢여덟 개의 모자로 남은 당신｣은 노년을 혐오하거나 부정하면서 건강하고 행복한 노년의 표상만을 강조하는 성공적 노화의 지배적인 담론에서 벗어나 나이듦의 양상을 직시하고 그 존재론적 의미를 추구한다. 그리하여 삶에 존재할 수밖에 없는 의존성과 유한성을 문제로 만드는 지배적인 노년담론에 균열을 내면서 노년서사의 윤리를 보여준다.

영문 초록

This study set out to investigate the process of old people recollecting their lives and reestablishing their identities based on Ricoeur s narrative identity with a focus on Park Wan􋹲seo s The Trance of Falling Sun and You Left with Eight Hats. In The Trance of Falling Sun, the old lady experiences a disruption of identity due to her hatred against her deteriorating body and her fear for death. Recollecting her childhood, the self Identity(ipse) of Grandma Hwacho, who tended the grandfather that fell due to a stroke, and friendship􋹲based consideration between Grandma Hwacho and her paternal grandmother, however, she is willing to accept her old body. In You Left with Eight Hats, the narrator reflects on life and death through the self Identity(ipse) of her husband that is fulfilling his promises bravely before his death. Taking care of her husband, she realizes the vulnerable nature of human beings destined to death and reestablishes her identity with a future prospect of living and loving with others for the remaining of her days. In short, Park s The Trance of Falling Sun and You Left with Eight Hats grow out of the dominant discourse of successful aging to despise or deny old age and emphasize only the healthy and happy representation of old age, looking straight at the patterns of aging and seeking after its existential meanings. Causing a crack in the dominant old age discourse that finds problems in the inevitable dependence and finiteness of life, they show the ethics of old age narratives.
