백제 웅진 왕도의 고지형환경과 문화경관

국문 초록

본 연구는 공주 시가지 내 역사·고고학적 조사 성과와 고지형 분석을 통하여 백제 웅진 왕도의 안정적인 생활공간을 구체화하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 고지도와 일제강점기의 지적도 분석, 근대 시장의 형성에 따른 지형개간과 공주 시가지 내 발굴조사 성과를 종합적으로 검토하고 공주 시가지의 고지형 분석을 통해 제민천의 구유로와 함께 동쪽과 서쪽 지역에서 확인되는 다양한 미지형들을 살펴보았다. 이와 같은 고지형과 인문환경의 분석을 실시하고 공주 시가지 내 시장의 위치 변화 모습을 비교한 결과 매우 유의미한 내용을 살필 수 있었다. 제민천 유역의 남쪽 상류 지역에서는 주변 지형에 의한 제한된 좁은 유역이 형성되었다. 이곳은 남쪽의 우금치 고개를 통하는 남북도로를 중심으로 웅진 왕도의 외곽 연결도로가 존재하는 것 으로 판단된다. 중류 지역에서는 봉황산의 매몰 미지형에 의해 동쪽으로 넓게 유역이 형성되면서 제민천 서쪽으로 안정적인 생활공간을 형성하였다. 이는 고고학 조사성과에서도 확인되는데, 봉황산의 동향 사면 매몰 미지형에 해당하는 곳에서는 표고 19~21m 내외의 평탄 지대가 형성되어 가장 안정적인 대지를 이루고 있다. 반면에 제민천 북쪽으로 금강에 합수되는 하류 지역에서는 인위적인 도시의 형성을 기대하기 어려운 환경이 조성되어 있었다. 특히 금강의 범람에 의한 저습지형의 형성은 안정적인 생활공간 형성에 한계가 있었을 것으로 판단된다. 다만 금강과의 합수 지점에 해당하는 곳이기 때문에, 공산성 인근에 금강을 통한 수로의 형성 가능성을 배제할 수 없다. 이 북쪽 지역은 백제 웅진 왕도의 자연 방어적 성격의 지형으로서 활용되었을 것으로 판단된다. 또한 서쪽 곰나루와 공산성 서쪽의 나루는 웅진 왕도로 진입할 수 있는 중요 관문으로서 공간의 의미를 검토할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to identify the stable living space of Baekje s capital by analyzing the historical and archaeological findings in Gongju City (formerly Woongjin) and its natural terrain. Our analyses of the palaeolandform environment involved reviewing the land registration map from the Japanese colonial era; assessing the results of an excavation survey in Gongju City; and inspecting the various uncharted and undeveloped terrain in the east and west regions and along the old flow channel of the Jaemin Stream of Gongju City. Our fruitful analyses of the topography and human-environment identified many changes, including the relocation of the market within the city and other significant findings. In the upper stream of the southern part of the Jemin Stream basin, a restricted, narrow basin had formed. The capital city s outer connecting road centered on the north-south road cutting through the Ugeumchi Pass to the south. In the midstream area, a large basin had formed to the east near a burial site on Bonghwang Mountain, creating a stable living space west of the Jaemin Stream. The archaeological investigation confirmed an undisturbed burial area under a flat area about 19 to 21 meters (62 to 69 feet) up the east-facing slope of Bonghwang Mountain; that was the most stable site. However, the north s lower reaches where the Jemin Stream joins the Geum River was considered unsuitable for establishing human settlements. The low wetland created by the flooding of the Geum River appears too unstable to build on. However, it might be possible to build along the waterway through the Geum River near the Gongsan Fortress, where it merges with the river. This northern area was probably used as a natural defensive feature for the capital. In addition, the Gomnaru area and a river crossing, both west of the Gongsan Fortress, were the principal gateways to the capital, so the significance of these geographical features must be examined further.
