정유재란 시기 사천성 전투의 경과와 의미

국문 초록

임진왜란 초기부터 전략적 요충지였던 사천은 거북선이 첫 출전한 사천해전으로 유명한 곳이다. 사천의 전략적 중요성은 정유재란 시기에도 변하지 않아 일본군은 칠천량해전 이후 이곳을 경유하여 전라도를 공략하였으며, 그 후 사천에 왜성을 쌓아서 전쟁이 끝날 때까지 장기주둔하였다. 이러한 일본군이 주둔한 사천 왜성에 대한 공격전이 1598년 하반기에 있었다. 사천왜성은 1598년 조명연합군의 사로병진(四路竝進) 작전 시 중로군(中路軍)의 공격목표였고, 이 전투의 결과는 같은 기간에 있었던 다른 지역에서의 전투에 큰 영향을 끼쳤다. 그런데 명나라 장수 동일원(董一元)이 지휘한 명군과 조선의 정기룡이 지휘한 조선군이 연합하여 싸운 이 전투가 패배한 전투이기에 중요성에 비해 연구가 많지 않았다. 그리고 연구 내용 역시 소략한 면이 있었다. 본고에서는 사천성 전투에 국한하여 구체적으로 살펴보았다. 상세한 전투 경과를 살펴보면서 전투의 진행 과정에 대한 이해를 돕고, 이 전투가 당시 전황에 미친 영향과 의미가 무엇인지를 제시하였다. 이를 통해 정유재란 당시 사천성 전투를 드러내고 교훈을 도출하고자 하였다. 전투 결과 중로군의 패전 원인은 주장(主將) 동일원의 전술구사 능력의 부재 때문이며, 중로군의 패배는 당시 사로병진작전을 수행하던 동로군과 서로군에게 후퇴의 빌미를 제공하였다. 아울러 당시 왜성 공략이 어려운 점을 재확인해 준 사례였다. 일본은 시마즈 요시히로가 지휘한 사천성 전투에서 승리한 사실을 드러내기 위해 일제강점기에 현창사업을 진행하였으며, 오늘날 사천 선진리성에서 그 흔적을 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Sacheon is a well-known location not only for the first combat of the Turtle Ships but also had been one of the strategic points since the beginning of the Imjin War. The strategic value of Sacheon had not changed even in the Jungyou War period. The Japanese forces moved into Jeonra Province through this point after Chilcheon-ryang naval war and they have constructed a fortress for long-term occupation of the area until the war had ended. There was the battle of Sacheon, a fortress occupied by the Japanese in late 1598. Sacheon fortress was one of the main targets of attack as it was located in the middle of the path of attack for the Joseon-Ming allied forces. The outcome of this battle had significant impact on battles raging in other areas in the same time period. Although Ming’s General Dong Il-won and Korean troops commanded by Jeong Gi-ryong from Joseon had joined forces, they were defeated. Unfortunately, despite the significance, there are no in-depth studies and analysis of this battle. This study is a detailed analysis exclusive to The Battle of Sacheon Fortress. It is aimed to aid the understanding of this particular battle in a sequential progression, the effect and meaning it had on the war itself. Thusly, it will offer a chance for more exposure to the Battle of Sacheon Fortress and discuss the lessons from the conflict. Preliminary analysis shows that the main cause of this defeat was the allied commander Dong Il-won’s lacking ability for strategic deployment, which provided excuses for a retreat on both east and west flanks of the allied forces while carrying out the 4-ray movement military maneuver. Also, it was a clear case which demonstrated the difficulties of seizing Japanese style castle. During the Japanese occupation of Korea in the early 20th century, the Japanese excavated the Sacheon area in order to commemorate their victory in the battle of Sacheon Fortress. It is still exhibited in The Seonjinri-seong€ Fortress in Sacheon.
